Cavaliers Come up Short at Glenville State College, Fall 82-74

Box Score GLENVILLE, W.Va. – UVa-Wise men's basketball put together a valiant second-half effort but was not able to complete a comeback Saturday evening in a 82-74 loss at Glenville State College. The Cavaliers (1-7, 0-4 MEC) battled back from a 21-point second-half deficit to get within one possession with 1:42 remaining but several missed shots down the stretch proved to be too little, too late. The Pioneers (2-3, 2-2 MEC) hit four free throws and made two layups in the final two minutes of play to secure the eight-point victory.

A layup by redshirt junior and Fairmont State University forward transfer Taiwo Badmus (London, England) gave UVa-Wise an 11-10 lead five minutes and 15 seconds into the game. It was the last lead the Cavs would own for the remainder of the contest. Over the next 11 and a half minutes, Glenville State outscored UVa-Wise 22-9 to build a 12-point 32-20 advantage with 3:34 remaining in the opening half.

The Pioneers took a 41-31 lead into the break after shooting 42.9 percent (12-of-28) in the first half and going 5-of-14 (35.7 percent) from beyond the arc. The Cavs shot the ball at a 41.4 percent (12-of-29) mark in the first 20 minutes of play as freshman point guard Michal Seals (Lancaster, Pa.) scored 15 of UVa-Wise's 31 first-half points on 6-of-10 shooting.

Glenville State continued its extended run in the second half by outscoring UVa-Wise 16-8 in the first five minutes of second period, building an 18-point 57-39 lead. UVa-Wise was unable to do much damage to the Pioneers' lead as the deficit was ballooned to 21 at 69-48 after a layup by Marcus Schofield with 8:40 remaining. A 9-0 run by the Cavs over the next two and a half minutes trimmed the lead down to 69-57 with 6:16 to go.

A 3-pointer by Badmus at the 4:16 mark capped an 8-2 UVa-Wise run and got the Cavs within two possessions at 71-65. UVa-Wise then got within four with 2:20 remaining when sophomore forward Leandro Amador (São Paulo, Brazil) made a layup to make the score 74-70. Following Glenville State's Brett Morris going 1-for-2 at the free-throw line, Badmus hit another layup to get the Cavs within three at 75-72 with only 1:42 to go. After a missed layup by the Pioneers' Darhius Nunn, Morris grabbed an offensive rebound and made a layup to put Glenville State ahead 77-72 with 1:08 left on the clock.

UVa-Wise failed to score on the next two possessions despite two free-throw misses by Nunn with 58 ticks left, resulting in another trip to the charity stripe by the Pioneers with 43 seconds remaining. Glenville State's Brook Ely knocked down both of his foul shots to make it a seven-point game and the Cavs came up empty once again on their ensuing possession. A free throw by Jon Dunmyer all but sealed the win for the Pioneers, putting Glenville State ahead 80-72 with only 30 seconds remaining. A pair of free throws by Badmus with 26 ticks left made the score 80-74 before the Pioneers' Nunn scored on a long outlet pass from Morris with 17 seconds to go, making the score a final at 82-74

The Cavs outscored Glenville State 26-13 over the final eight and a half minutes of the game. UVa-Wise shot the ball at only 39.1 percent (27-of-69), including 4-of-21 (19 percent) from 3-point distance, for the 40 minutes, while the Pioneers hit 50 percent (26-of-52) of their shots from the field and went 7-of-24 (29.2 percent) from beyond the arc. Fifteen Cavalier turnovers, eight of which came in the first half, resulted in 24 Glenville State points as UVa-Wise assisted on only five of its 27 made field goals.

One area the Cavs shined was rebounding with UVa-Wise outrebounding the Pioneers 45-35 and 20-8 on the offensive glass. Those 20 offensive boards resulting in 23 second-chance points.

Dunmyer earned 19 points for Glenville State on 6-of-8 shooting, going 3-of-4 from downtown, while Terry Davis Jr., Ely and Jalon Plummer each contributed nine points for the Pioneers.

UVa-Wise's second-leading scorer, redshirt sophomore Dimitri Sousa (São Paulo, Brazil) (18.7 ppg), did not make the trip due to illness.

The Cavs will now return to non-conference action Tuesday with an exhibition game at NCAA Division I Wofford College. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. from inside Benjamin Johnson Arena in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
