WISE, Va. – UVa-Wise hits the road Saturday for a Mountain East Conference matchup at Glenville State College, tipoff is slated for 4 p.m. or 20 minutes after the women's game.
The Pioneers are coming off of their first win of the season and first MEC victory of the year. Glenville State upended Concord University 94-90 Wednesday night in Athens, West Virginia, after shooting 50.8 percent (33-of-65) for the game and knocking down 11 3-pointers. Offense was not sparse in the contest as the Mountain Lions made 13 3-pointers themselves and the Pioneers had five different players score in double figures. Both junior guard Jon Dunmyer and senior forward Brett Morris reached 20 points in the game with Morris notching a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds.
Glenville State has suffered three road losses this season including MEC defeats at Shepherd University (89-86) and at Fairmont State University (114-93), in addition to a 103-78 non-conference loss at Walsh University last Saturday. Saturday's game will be the Pioneers first home game of the early season as Glenville State plays eight of its first 10 games on the road.
The Pioneers are led by eighth-year head coach Stephen Dye, who owns an 85-121 all-time record while at the helm. Glenville State is averaging 87.8 points per game through four games this year but the Pioneers are giving up 99 points per contest and allowing opponents to shoot at a mark of 54.8 percent. Four different Glenville State players are averaging double figure scoring led by Dunmyer (20.5 ppg), followed by Morris (16.3 ppg), junior guard Terry Davis Jr. (15.5 ppg) and senior guard Jalon Plummer (11 ppg).
UVa-Wise is 0-6 against the Pioneers since the inception of the MEC, dropping a close, 84-79 contest inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center last December and falling 77-59 in Glenville this past February. In that most recent meeting between the two teams, the Pioneers hit 10 3-pointers and attempted 34 as five different Glenville State players scored in double figures. Plummer posted 18 points and seven boards while Morris finished with 12 points and nine rebounds.
UVa-Wise is still seeking its first MEC win of the season as the Cavs play their third true road game. The Cavs were defeated 77-70 by West Virginia Wesleyan Wednesday night inside the Prior Center in a game that featured two teams shooting over 50 percent from the field.
The visiting Bobcats made 61.2 percent (30-of-49) of their shots as UVa-Wise shot the ball at 52.8 percent (28-of-53) for the game, including 55.6 percent (15-of-27) in the second half. After a very early 2-0 lead, the Cavs trailed for the remainder of the game and got no closer than six points of West Virginia Wesleyan in the second half. Redshirt junior forward
Taiwo Badmus (London, England), who is leading UVa-Wise in scoring at 20.3 points per game, led all scorers with 26 points on a career-high 10 field goals made.
