Men’s Basketball Overpowered by No. 12 Lincoln Memorial University

Box Score WISE, Va. – Nationally ranked Lincoln Memorial University gave UVa-Wise men's basketball all it could handle and more as the Railsplitters (4-2) defeated the Cavaliers (1-5) 105-62 Saturday evening inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center. Lincoln Memorial looked to be focused and poised, clicking on all cylinders after two consecutive losses for the first time since February of 2012.

Ranked No. 12 according to the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) poll, the Railsplitters shot 57.5 percent (42-of-73) from the field and outrebounded the Cavs by a margin of 27 (55-28). UVa-Wise was overwhelmingly outmatched down low, being outscored 62-22 in points in the paint.

The Cavs only made 18 shots the entire 40 minutes, shooting at a mark of 28.1 percent (18-of-64) for the game that including going 4-for-23 (17.4 percent) from beyond the arc. Lincoln Memorial played fast and furious, collecting 32 fast-break points compared to just four by UVa-Wise. The Railsplitters earned 16 points off of 12 offensive rebounds while outscoring the Cavs 53-19 off the bench.

UVa-Wise never led in the game and was only able to tie up the score twice. After a jumper by redshirt sophomore Dimitri Sousa (São Paulo, Brazil), the Cavs made it a 4-4 game with 18 minutes to go but that would be the last time UVa-Wise would see the scored knotted up. Three consecutive missed layups by the Cavs and three missed 3-pointers by the Railsplitters resulted in a near two-and-a-half minute scoring drought by both teams. From there, Lincoln Memorial would go on a 9-2 run to take a 13-6 lead six minutes and 10 seconds into the opening half.

A free throw by freshman guard Chance Sheffey (Staunton, Va.) at the 13:24 mark of the first half made it 13-7 game; it would be the closest the Cavs would be to the Railsplitters for the rest of the contest. An over six minute scoring drought for UVa-Wise ensued as Lincoln Memorial went on a 15-0 run, pushing its lead to 21 with 7:28 remaining in the half.

The Cavs showed signs of life once again with a 9-0 run of their own over the next two minutes, trimming down the deficit to 28-16 with 5:26 to go before the break. The Railsplitters responded by outscoring UVa-Wise 26-6 to end the half, taking a commanding 32-point 54-22 advantage into the locker room.

Lincoln Memorial shot 61.1 percent (22-of-36) in the opening 20 minutes of play and went 6-for-13 (46.2 percent) from 3-point land. Junior forward Emanuel Terry went 8-of-8 from the field and scored 16 first-half points for the Railsplitters, including making five impressive flushes, while freshman guard Deshawn Patterson went 4-for-4 from downtown to earn 14 points.

UVa-Wise only made six first-half baskets, shooting at a clip of 20.7 percent (6-of-29) and going 1-for-9 from the perimeter. Redshirt junior forward Taiwo Badmus (London, England) had 12 first-half points for the Cavs.

The Cavs played better offense in the second half and were only outscored 51-40 as UVa-Wise shot 34.3 percent (12-of-35) in the second 20 minutes of play. However, UVa-Wise was only able get Lincoln Memorials' lead inside 30 points once after a Sheffey free throw with 16:18 remaining. After full-sail subs by the Railsplitters with nine and a half minutes to play, the Cavs went on a 8-0 run capped by a pair of free throws from junior guard Ricardo Hill Jr. (Cincinnati, Ohio), trimming the margin down to 32 at 82-50 with 7:44 to go.

Lincoln Memorial outscored UVa-Wise 23-12 over the final seven and a half minutes of the game to make the 105-62 score final. The Railsplitters shot 54.1 percent (20-of-37) in the second half, including 50 percent (5-of-10) from long range.

Badmus led three UVa-Wise players scoring in double figures with 20 points and a team-high six rebounds. Sousa finished with 13 and junior guard DeMarcus Edwards (Washington, D.C.) added a career-high 10 points. In his first career start, Sheffey tallied four points and grabbed four boards, while freshman point guard Michal Seals (Lancaster, Pa.) scored five and handed out three assists. Both redshirt freshman guard Darren Belardo (Virginia Beach, Va.) and sophomore forward transfer Ethan Driskill (Ringgold, Va.) made their first career buckets as Cavs.

Two Railsplitters posted double-doubles as Terry totaled a game-high 21 points and 14 rebounds and junior forward Dorian Pinson netted 14 points, claimed 12 boards and dished out a team-high six assists. Patterson finished with 19 and redshirt senior guard Luquon Choice added 11 more. Lincoln Memorial had 15 different players see game action, including 13 who played at least five minutes or more.

This evening's 43-point loss is the largest margin of defeat for UVa-Wise since falling 110-48 at Fairmont State University on Jan. 4 last season.

The Cavs will wrap up their three-game homestand Wednesday as UVa-Wise returns to Mountain East Conference play and hosts West Virginia Wesleyan. Tipoff from the Prior Center is slated for 7:30 p.m. or 20 minutes after the completion of the women's game.
