Chance Sheffey's (Staunton, Va.) 19 points, the Cavaliers (1-0) shot 53 percent from the floor and were a perfect 6-for-6 in the overtime period.

Ricardo Hill Jr. (Cincinnati, Ohio) opened up the game with a 3-pointer and four consecutive points from Badmus gave the Cavs a 7-0 early lead. The two teams would go back and forth over the next 14 minutes before the Vikings (0-1) closed out the opening half on a 9-4 run.
Trailing 38-33 at the half, UVa-Wise shot 48 percent (13-of-27) in the opening 20 minutes of play and seemed to be hindered by nine first-half turnovers. Elizabeth City State went 16-for-37 (43 percent) in the opening half and were 4-for-10 from beyond the arc. Redshirt sophomore
Dimitri Sousa (São Paulo, Brazil) led the Cavs with 10 first-half points and five rebounds, while Elizabeth City State's Kyree Marshall had eight boards after 20 minutes of play and Jordan Jones earned eight points.
UVa-Wise worked its way back in the second half and tied up the score at 42-42 at the 16-minute mark after a conventional 3-point play by freshman point guard
Michal Seals (Lancaster, Pa.). A 3-pointer and a free throw by Elizabeth City State kept the Cavs at bay before a layup by redshirt junior guard
Desmon Shaver (Charlottesville, Va.) regained the lead for UVa-Wise. A steal and a pair of free throws from Hill Jr. increased the Cavs' lead to as much as nine at 74-65 with just under four minutes to play.
That lead would not hold as the Vikings tied it up at 82-82 on a Jones' tip in with just over a minute to go in regulation. After a pair of Badmus' free throws, Jones scored another bucket for Elizabeth City State to send the game into OT. In overtime, the Cavs outscored the Vikings 16-13 and made every shot taken except two free throws. Up by one with under a minute to go, Seals found Hill Jr. in the corner for a 3-pointer that put the Cavs up by four. Elizabeth City State made a basket to cut UVa-Wise's lead to two but Shaver hit a late free throw and the Vikings' heave at the buzzer was off, giving the Cavs the season opening win.
Six different Cavs scored in double figures as UVa-Wise completed the night going 35-for-66 and collecting 49 total rebounds. The Cavs made 25 free throws and outscored the Vikings 50-44 down low. Earning 21 points off of turnovers and another 21 from 16 offensive rebounds, UVa-Wise outscored Elizabeth City State 11-2 on fast-break points.
The Vikings shot the ball at 44.7 percent (38-of-85) for the game and were 9-of-22 (40.9 percent) from downtown. Elizabeth City State collected 48 total rebounds, including 20 on offense, and claimed 21 second-chance points.
In his first game in a Cavalier uniform, Badmus went 9-for-14 (64.3 percent) from the field and earned seven of his 21 rebounds on the offensive glass. He was also 11-of-15 at the charity stripe and made two blocks. In his first collegiate game, Sheffey went 7-for-11 (63.6 percent) from the floor and added three rebounds and a block. Also playing in his first college basketball game and starting at point guard for UVa-Wise, Seals finished with 13 points on 4-for-8 shooting, had a game-high eight assists and got two steals. Despite fouling out, Sousa earned 12 points, six rebounds and two blocks for the Cavs. Sophomore forward
Leandro Amador (São Paulo, Brazil) had a near double-double and posted a career high in both points and rebounds, tallying 11 points and nine boards to go along with a pair of blocks. Hill Jr. went 4-for-4 at the foul line while scoring 10 points and grabbing two rebounds.
Jones led Elizabeth City State with 20 points on 10-of-16 shooting and 13 rebounds. The Vikings got 16 points from John Maynor, who fouled out in regulation after going 4-for-5 from downtown, and 13 more from Clayton Cowell. Marshall posted a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds for Elizabeth City State as Matthew McIntosh added 12 points and five boards. The Vikings' Elon Edwards earned a team-high five assists and scored nine points.
The Cavs will continue play at the Earl Lloyd Classic tomorrow when they take on another Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association opponent in Virginia Union University. The Panthers are receiving six votes in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Preseason Poll, tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
