Men’s Tennis Begins 2016-17 Season with Win

ATHENS, W.Va. – The UVa-Wise men's tennis team opened up the non-conference fall portion of their schedule Sunday afternoon with a 5-2 win at Concord University. The Cavaliers (1-0) defeated the homestanding Mountain Lions (1-1) by winning both doubles matches and claiming three out of the five singles matches played. Both teams only had five players able to compete, resulting in No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles not being played.

Making his collegiate debut, freshman Josh McFadden (Newport News, Va.) teamed up with junior Christopher Armistead (Virginia Beach, Va.) at second doubles to take down the Mountain Lions' Daniel Rose and William Dick, 8-4. The tandem of juniors Andrii Rutnytskyi (Odessa, Ukraine) and Viktor Tunnikov (Kharkiv, Ukraine) picked up the Cavs' second doubles win of the day when they defeated Concord's Alfonso Jeminez and Stan Cohn 8-6 at No. 1 doubles.

In singles play, UVa-Wise earned three straight-set wins courtesy of McFadden, Rutnytskyi and Armistead. McFadden won by the most convincing score at No. 3 singles, defeating Rose of Concord 6-0, 6-0. At the top singles spot it was Rutnytskyi who was a 6-0, 6-1 winner against the Mountain Lions' Jeminez, while Armistead topped Dick of Concord, 6-1, 6-0.

The Mountain Lions picked up their two singles wins at No. 5 and No. 2 singles. Despite junior Noah Aldridge (Pennington Gap, Va.) winning the first set 6-4 against Concord's Adam Tolliver at the fifth spot, he wasn't able to hang on for the win. Aldridge fell 7-5 in a very close second-set tiebreaker before being defeated in the third-set 10-point tiebreak, 10-7. At second singles, the Mountain Lions' Cohn handed Tunnikov a 6-2, 6-3 loss.

The Cavs are back in action next Saturday when they join the women's team in Greeneville, Tennessee, for a 10 a.m. match at Tusculum College.
