Storylines –Urbana GameUrbana had its three-game Mountain East Confernce winning streak snapped on Wednesday when Glenville State claimed a 109-92 victory. Despite the loss, Blue Knights'
sophomore Danie Shafer scored over 30 points for the third time this year. The guard made seven 3-pointers and a career-high 11 field goals en route to her 31 points.
Shafer ranks fourth among all MEC players with 19.1 points per game while ranking seventh in the league in free throw percentage at 79.7. Her 39.4 percent shooting from
distance is tops among league players and ranks 65th nationally among all NCAA Division II players. An area of concern for Haley Ducey's squad has been its defense. Urbana
enters Sunday's contest last in the MEC in scoring defense at 88.1 points per game. This season, the Blue Knights have allowed 80 or more points on seven occassions. In an
exhibition contest at NCAA Division I Ball State, the Blue Knights surrendered 151 points. In addition to Ball State, Urbana has played a tough schedule in the early going.
The Blue Knights dropped a 95-79 decision to then No. 21 West Liberty on Nov. 23 before falling 81-49 to then No. 11 Ashland on Dec. 20. In its two meetings against
UVa-Wise last year, Urbana struggled to score, the team tallied just 97 points in the two games while being swept in the season series.
About UVa-WiseIn search of its first road conference win of the season, UVa-Wise visits Urbana University on Sunday. Coming off a pair of close league losses at Fairmont State and Shepherd,
coach
Kristin Kunzman's team will be looking to finish off the opposition when her club heads north to Ohio. The Cavs entered the fourth quarter of both games in position
to win. At Fairmont State the team entered the final period leading 50-45 only to see the game slip away, 86-82 in double overtime meanwhile, at Shepherd the team
trailed by just six after three periods only to see the Rams hang on late to score a 69-62 triumph. The two games saw junior point guard
Taylor Sandidge never leave the
floor. The Waynesboro native played 50 minutes in the double overtime affair at Fairmont before logging all 40 minutes of the game at Shepherd. The junior ranks third in
the MEC in minutes played at 35.1 per game, trailing Mariah Collins of Wheeling Jesuit and teammate
Blair Harding. Harding is averaging 35.4 minutes a night. A positive
for the Cavs is they are traveling to a pair of schools they have had success at on the road. Last season, UVa-Wise won both games of the two-city stop in Ohio. At Urbana,
UVa-Wise limited the Blue Knights to 23.9 percent shooting from the field and just a 1-11 showing from the 3-point line. Sixteen of Urbana's 39 points in the game came
from the free throw line. Overall, UVa-Wise has won three consecutive games in the state of Ohio.
