Box Score FAIRMONT, W.Va. – UVa-Wise men's basketball suffered its worst loss of the season Monday night at seventh-ranked Fairmont State, falling by a count of 110-48. The Fighting Falcons (10-1, 4-1), who used a full-court press the entire game, held the Cavaliers (1-9, 0-5 MEC) to a season-low 48 points and spawned UVa-Wise to commit 26 turnovers.
The Fighting Falcons earned 40 points off of those Cavalier turnovers and outscored UVa-Wise 52 to 16 in points in the paint. Second chance points was also the name of the game in Fairmont State's victory, earning 33 points off of 20 offensive rebounds compared to just seven points on eight offensive boards from the Cavs.
UVa-Wise came out on fire through the first six minutes and ten seconds of the game, making six of their first eight shots (75 percent) including going 2-for-2 on three-point attempts. At the first media timeout of the opening half with 13:50 to go, the Cavs held their last lead of the game at 14-13. From that point forward UVa-Wise was outplayed in all facets of the game by a tough, physical and intent Fairmont State team.
The Fighting Falcons went on a 19-1 run over the next six minutes to build a 15-point 30-15 advantage over the Cavs. UVa-Wise would not climb back within more than 11 points for the rest of the game as Fairmont State took a 49-27 lead into the break.
The Cavs shot 33 percent (9-for-27) in the opening 20 minutes and were 4-for-10 (40 percent) from downtown. The Fighting Falcons made 18 of 40 first-half field goals (45 percent), going 7-for-18 from beyond the arc (38.9 percent).
Fairmont State began the second half on a 12-0 scoring run with the Cavs going scoreless for nearly the first three and a half minutes. A two-handed dunk by redshirt freshman guard
Camryn Fort (Fayetteville, N.C.) finally broke the scoring drought, only cutting Fighting Falcons' lead to 32.
Hitting the 100-point mark with 4:15 remaining in the game, the Fighting Falcons ballooned their largest lead of the game to 62 points with 3:31 to go.
UVa-Wise hit its last field goal of the game at the 3:11 mark with a three-pointer by sophomore guard

Zach McDaniel (Bowling Green, Ky.) in the final three minutes ended the Cavs scoring for the night as Fairmont State took the 62-point win after a tip-in by R.J. Hutcherson with 44 seconds remaining.
The Cavs only made five second-half field goals, shooting 19.2 percent in the final 20 minutes and going 2-for-12 from three-point land. UVa-Wise shot 26.4 percent (14-for-53) for the game, including 27.3 percent (6-for-22) from distance while going 14-for-19 (73.7 percent) from the free-throw line.
Conversely, the Fighting Falcons went 23-for-39 (59 percent) from the field in the second half and were 7-for-16 (43.8 percent) from downtown. Fairmont State finished the game shooting 51.9 percent (41-for-79) including 41.2 percent (14-for-34) from beyond the arc.
No UVa-Wise player scored in double figures as sophomore forward
Dimitri Sousa (São Paulo, Brazil) and redshirt freshman guard
Lashain Matthews (Staunton, Va.) led the Cavs with eight points each. Senior forward
Matt Day (Buckhorn, Ky.) added four points and five rebounds while redshirt sophomore guard
Ricardo Hill Jr. (Cincinnati, Ohio) dished out five assists.
Fairmont State was led by Taiwo Badmus with 18 points and R.J. Hutcherson with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Jamel Morris added 14 points for the Fighting Falcons while Matt Bingaya scored 12 points and grabbed seven boards.
The Cavs will continue their four-game road trip by traveling to Shepherdstown, West Virginia, Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. tilt at Shepherd University.
