Box Score WISE, Va. – UVa-Wise men's basketball came out on the losing end of a 100-85 decision against Concord University Thursday night in Wise. The Cavaliers (3-14, 1-10 MEC) outscored the Mountain Lions (12-5, 7-4 MEC) in the second half 53-40 but could not come back from a 28-point 60-32 halftime deficit.
It took UVa-Wise four minutes and 15 seconds to score as the Mountain Lions opened up the game with 12 straight points. A layup by sophomore guard
Philip Owens II (Virginia Beach, Va.) ended the early scoring drought to cut the Concord lead to 12-2 with 15:46 left in the first half.
The Cavs cut the Mountain Lions' lead to six (21-15) with a jumper by redshirt freshman guard
Camryn Fort (Fayetteville, N.C.) at the 11:56 mark of the half. However, that would be the closest UVa-Wise would get for the rest of the night.
Concord went on an 18-8 run in the final four minutes of the opening half to take a 60-32 advantage into the break.
The Cavs shot the ball at only 29 percent (10-for-35) in the first half and were 4-for-18 (22 percent) from beyond the arc, while the Mountain Lions shot 55 percent (21-for-38) and were 10-for-19 (53 percent) in the opening 20 minutes of play. Concord owned a 29-17 edge on the boards through one half of play.
The Mountain Lions expanded their lead to 33 points (71-38) with 16:51 left for the largest margin of the night, before the Cavs went on a 13-4 scoring run over the next four minutes. A layin from freshman forward
Leandro Amador (São Paulo, Brazil) cut the lead down to 19 at 78-59 with 11:28 remaining.
Over the final seven minutes of the game UVa-Wise outscored the visiting Mountain Lions 21-10, but it wasn't enough as the Cavs trailed 90-64 with 7:19 left.
UVa-Wise finished the game shooting 39 percent (27-for-69) from the field, including 32 percent (12-for-38) from distance, but 50 percent (17-for-34) in the second half. The Cavs were 8-for-20 (40 percent) from three-point land in the final 20 minutes.
Concord was held to four second-half three-pointers after making 10 in the opening half and finished the game at 37 percent (14-for-38) from downtown. The Mountain Lions went 38-for-78 (49 percent) from the field for the game but were 17-for-40 (43 percent) in the second half.
Owens II tied his season high in points with 20 to lead the Cavs and distributed a career-high 11 assists, while senior forward
Matt Day (Buckhorn, Ky.) recorded his ninth double-double of the season with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore forward
Dimitri Sousa (São Paulo, Brazil) scored 17 points as junior transfer forward
Gervelle Kidd (Martinsville, Va.) added 11 more. Redshirt sophomore guard
Ricardo Hill Jr. (Cincinnati, Ohio) made a career-high tying nine assists to go along with eight points.
The Mountain Lions were led by returning All-MEC selection Aaron Miller with 27 points on 11-for-15 shooting, including 4-for-8 from long range, and senior guard Rob Reed, who also had 27 points. Reed scored 25 points in the first half but was held to just one field goal in the second half. Concord senior forward Terry Hopewell, a first-team All-MEC selection a year ago, earned a double-double with 10 rebounds and a game-high 14 boards.
The Cavs will now hit the road for one game, traveling to take on the University of Charleston Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off. The game will be played at Charleston Catholic High School in downtown Charleston.
