Box Score SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio - - Notre Dame College out-rebounded UVa-Wise 37-28 and made enough big plays late to score a 90-84 overtime Mountain East Conference victory at Murphy Gym Tuesday. The victory was the sixth straight for the Falcons who shot 53 percent from the field and made eight 3-pointers.
UVa-Wise (6-6, 2-6 MEC) got off to a quick start as eight quick points by Blair Harding had her team in front 12-6 with 6:06 to play in the opening quarter.
Notre Dame (8-6, 5-3 MEC) answered with a 6-0 run, reigning MEC Player of the Year Martha Nagbe scored four of her team-high 26 points during the stretch.
The Cavaliers outscored the Falcons 5-2 over the remainder of the quarter to take a 17-14 lead to the second 10-minute session.
Allison Ball opened the second period with a 3-pointer from the left corner before a Taylor Sandidge layup gave UVa-Wise its largest game of the lead at 24-16 with 7:49 to play in the half.
The dribble penetration of Nagbe allowed the Falcons to quickly respond. The hosts outscored the Cavs 17-9 the remainder of the half to enter intermission trailing by two at 35-33.
The contest remained tight until a 10-2 run by UVa-Wise gave the visitors a 52-44 mid-way through the third quarter. Sandidge scored four points during the run while also stealing a pass that led to an easy fast break basket by Ball.
UVa-Wise maintained the lead through the remainder of the period as Sandidge and Harding combined to score seven points over the final 2:58 of the quarter. An inside layup by Alle Moore gave the Cavs a 61-54 lead with nine seconds to play but, Martha Nagbe raced the length of the floor and got fouled. The guard made the two free throws to get her team within five with 10 minutes to play.
A pair of free throws by Kehana Grayer gave UVa-Wise a 65-58 lead with 8:23 to play but, once more Notre Dame answered. A 3-pointer by Celine Mangan off a Nagbe assist started a 7-0 spurt for the Falcons who tied the game at 65-65 with 7:03 remaining.
Coach Katie Hine's Notre Dame club spent the remainder of the fourth quarter reeling in UVa-Wise. The Falcons took their first lead of the second half when Nagbe stole a pass and found Kelsey Miller for a layup inside. The bucket gave the Falcons a 75-74 lead with just over a minute to go.
Three consecutive made free throws put the Cavs back in front at 77-75 with 39 seconds to play only to see Langenderfer drain a 3-pointer from the left wing.
Trailing by one, Sandidge went to the basket and scored inside regaining the lead for UVa-Wise at 79-78. A possession later, Langenderfer missed a 3-pointer; however, Nagbe corralled the offensive rebound and put it back in to give her team a one-point advantage.
Coach Kristin Kunzman called timeout to setup a game-winning field attempt. The shot would never occur as Alyssa Kraus was called for a foul with less than one second remaining trying to guard Harding off the dribble.
Harding went to the line and made one of two foul shots to send the game to an extra five-minute period.
An unlikely hero arose for Notre Dame in overtime as Hope Thorbahn scored four points, grabbed two rebounds and handed out an assist to lead the Falcons to victory. Thorbahn made a pair of foul shots with under a minute to go to extend the Falcons' lead to two possessions at 89-84. Overall, Notre Dame closed the game on a 6-0 run.
Langenderfer finished with 20 points while Thorbahn posted 10 points off the bench. Nagbe added four rebounds, eight assists and four steals to her team-high 26 points.
Harding registered a season-high 29 points and added seven assists. Sandidge chipped in 16 points and added three steals while Grayer and Moore tallied 11 points each.
The game wraps up a four-game road trip for UVa-Wise. The Cavs return home Saturday to face MEC leader West Liberty in a 2 p.m. tip-off.
