Box Score ETTRICK, Va. – The UVa-Wise women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 non-conference setback Tuesday evening in the Richmond, Virginia, area at Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association member Virginia State.

The Cavaliers (6-7, 2-0 MEC) could not recover after being edged in a very tightly contested opening set as the Trojans (8-6, 4-1 CIAA) claimed the final two sets and the match (27-25, 25-15, 25-21).

The loss ends the Cavs' three-match win streak and UVa-Wise has now lost six consecutive games away from home.

After holding 24-21 lead in the first set, the Cavs lost six of the next seven points and allowed Virginia State to take the opening set. The Cavs hit .263 in the first set behind freshman middle blocker
Amanda Auxier's four kills and junior libero
Erin Lee's five digs.

The second set proved to be quite a struggle for the Cavs as they were held to a -.033 attack percentage, while Virginia State hit .208 for the set and cruised to a 10-point set win. Lee dished in five more digs in the set as junior outside hitter
Karley Allen made four.

Both the Cavs and the Trojans stepped up their play in the third set with UVa-Wise hitting .289 and recording 23 digs, while Virginia State held an attack percentage of .318 and made 25 digs in the set. Despite having the score tied at 20 apiece, the Cavs were not able to separate themselves as the Trojans earned five of the next six point to walk away with the set and the match.

Allen made five kills and six digs in the final set while Auxier and freshman outside hitter
Ciara Kain added four kills each. Freshman setter
Chandler Rouse and freshman defensive specialist
Eustaica Smith both tallied five digs in the third set.

The Cavs recorded 40 kills in the match but only hit .190 compared to Virginia State's .245 attack percentage and 38 kills. UVa-Wise did tally 50 total digs and 36 assists but were only able to make one block as the Trojans made nine total team blocks and recorded six aces.

Allen led the Cavs once again with a team-high 11 kills and 13 digs. The Lanexa, Virginia (New Kent H.S.), native is now only 11 kills away from becoming just the fourth Cav to ever reach 1,000 kills in her career.

Rouse made a match-high 33 assists for the Cavs while Lee collected 13 digs and
Eustaica Smith added 10 more.

Sydney Uko and Dierdre Carter led the Trojans with 11 kills each as Miranda Bass dished out 15 assists. Carter also added five blocks for Virginia State along with Ilse Williams, while Adriana Hazou collected 16 digs.

The Cavs will remain on the road but will step back into league play to take on Mountain East Conference foe West Liberty Friday at 7 p.m.
