Men’s Tennis Evens Record with 8-1 Win Over Maryville College

WISE, Va. – The UVa-Wise men's tennis team evened their fall non-conference record with a 8-1 win over NCAA Division III opponent Maryville College Sunday afternoon at home.
 
The Cavaliers (2-2) made it two match wins in a row as they closed out their four-match homestand with a victory over the Scots (0-1).
 
The Cavs jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after doubles play with the duo of sophomore Andrii Rutnytskyi and freshman Ethan Herron earning their second consecutive No. 1 doubles win of the fall season. The pair defeated Maryville's Markos Herrero and Daniel Silva 8-4 at the top spot.
 
Senior Oleg Kopychenko and sophomore Viktor Tunnikov were 8-5 winners at No. 2 doubles over Braxton Lang and Will Marttala of Maryville, while sophomores Noah Aldridge and Charles Pollard won by the identical score at No. 3 against the Scots' Charles Russell and Gabriel Rodriguez.
 
At No. 1 singles Rutnytskyi played a hard-fought match that was decided in a third-set super tiebreaker. The sophomore lost the first set 6-3 before rebounding back to claim the second 6-2 and take the super tiebreaker (13-11) against Maryville's Silva.
 
Both Aldridge and freshman Blake Pientka earned their first singles match wins of the fall season as Aldridge took down the Scots' Lang at the No. 5 spot (6-3, 6-2), and Pientka defeated Marttala of Maryville (7-6 (3), 6-2) at the sixth spot.
 
Herron got another singles win in just his second match of his collegiate career with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Maryville's Rodriguez.
 
Tunnikov won his second match in a row at No. 4 singles as he claimed a 6-1, 6-2 win against the Scots' Russell.
 
The Scots lone match win came at No. 2 singles as Herrero defeated the Cavs' Kopychenko, 6-2, 6-2.
 
Sunday afternoon's contest was the Cavs final home match of the fall non-conference schedule.
 
Next the Cavs will travel with the women's team to Banner Elk, North Carolina, Saturday to take on Lees-McRae College at 12 p.m.
