Box Score 2 ELKINS, W.Va. – Continuing their nine-game stretch of matches away from home the UVa-Wise women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches Friday to begin the Davis & Elkins tournament in Elkins, West Virginia.

The Cavaliers (3-4) fell in a close, five-set match this afternoon (31-29, 25-23, 27-29, 20-25, 15-8) to Slippery Rock before getting swept by Shippensburg University (25-20, 25-21, 25-21).

In the first match of the day against Slippery Rock (6-0) the Cavs were unable to complete a comeback after evening the match at two sets a piece. Playing Slippery Rock for the second Friday in a row, the Cavs played a very competitive match with three of the first four sets being decided by two points, and the first and third sets having to go to extra points.

Falling in very close first and second sets 31-29 and 25-23, UVa-Wise began a comeback bid by taking the third set 29-27 and the fourth set 25-20. In the fifth and deciding set it was Slippery Rock who prevailed 15-8.

The Cavs outhit Slippery rock with an attack percentage of .190 for the match compared to the Rock's attack percentage of .144. Both teams tallied 61 total kills for the match as UVa-Wise recorded 83 digs and 60 assists. Slippery Rock made 80 digs and 58 assists but also cashed in on 10 aces in the match.

UVa-Wise got career-highs in digs from both junior libero
Erin Lee (20) and sophomore
Samantha Edge (18). The Cavs were led by junior outside hitter
Karley Allen on offense with 21 kills as she added 15 digs as well. Junior middle blocker
Lindsey Tucker tallied an attack percentage of .522 off of 12 kills, while freshman setter
Chandler Rouse had a career-high 58 assists in her second-career start.

Leah Jones led Slippery Rock with 24 kills and 19 digs as Haley Defibaugh made 50 assists. Courtney Oberlander added 18 digs and Jaden Zimmer recorded 12 kills for the Rock.

In the evening match against Shippensburg (4-1) the Cavs were unable to get their offense going in the first two sets before hitting better in the third. UVa-Wise held an attack percentage of .054 for the match compared to Shippensburg's .205.

The Cavs recorded 32 kills for the match, 55 total digs and 30 assists, while the Raiders made 40 kills, 61 digs and 39 assists.

UVa-Wise hit .079 behind four kills and four digs from Allen and four more kills from freshman outside hitter
Ciara Kain in the first set. Shippensburg hit .194 in the opening set and tallied 13 kills on its way to a 25-20 set win.

The Cavs recorded an attack percentage of only -.082 in the second as Allen added 10 more digs. Both teams record 11 kills in the second but the Raiders recorded 26 digs and claimed the set 25-21.

UVa-Wise fell in the third 25-21 as well despite Allen's eight kills and eight digs. Hitting .186 for the set and recording 14 kills, the Cavs also got five digs from each Lee and junior outside hitter
Erin Anderson. Shippensburg had an attack percentage of .350 in the final set with 16 kills.

Allen posted a match-high in both kills (15) and digs (22) for the Cavs, while Rouse tallied 28 assists and Lee made nine digs.

Morgan DeFloria led Shippensburg with 11 kills as Taylor Gottshall led on defense with nine blocks. Maura Nolan recorded 34 assists and Maria Peluso added 14 digs for the Raiders in the match.

UVa-Wise continues at the Davis & Elkins tournament tomorrow as the Cavs take on tournament host Davis & Elkins at 11:30 a.m. before facing Bluefield State at 2 p.m.

Following tomorrow's matches the Cavs return to Wise Thursday for their home opener against Milligan College at 6:30 p.m. in historic Greear Gymnasium.
