Box Score WISE - - Blair Harding turned in one of the finer games of her collegiate career as she tallied 28 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, and four steals as UVa-Wise rolled to an 87-48 win over West Virginia State at the Prior Center.
The win completed a season-series sweep for coach Kristin Kunzman's team, the Cavaliers defeated the Yellow Jackets 72-58 in Institute on January 8.
UVa-Wise (9-15, 8-10) made its first five shots of the game but led by just one at 17-16 with 10:57 to play in the opening half after West Virginia State's Shealyn Shafer scored off a pass from Alexus Hobbs.
Led by Kayla Carey, the Cavaliers would go on a 14-2 run to gain a 31-18 lead with 6:09 to play in the first half. In the run, Carey scored six of her 15 points; she finished the game 7-12 from the field.
West Virginia State (7-15, 5-12) would get no closer than nine points over the remainder of the half, before falling behind by as many as 16 in the opening 20 minutes. The Yellow Jackets' Trina Current scored the final bucket of the half to send her team to the locker room trailing 42-28.
The Cavaliers shot a blistering 58.1 percent from the floor in the opening half and finished a perfect 5-5 from the charity stripe.
UVa-Wise's offensive onslaught continued in the second half as the visitors would get no closer than 10 points. Once West Virginia State cut the lead to 10, the hosts responded with a 14-0 run to run the lead to 61-37 with 8:43 to play.
Karey 15 points, and Allison Ball 13 points joined Harding in double figure scoring in what proved to be the Cavs biggest margin of victory on the year.
Hobbs scored 14 points to finish as the only Yellow Jackets player in double figures.
The win coupled with a Concord loss puts UVa-Wise two games ahead of the Mountain Lions for eighth place in the Mountain East Conference standings. Thus, the Cavs remain the last team to host an opening round MEC Tournament contest.
UVa-Wise will return to action on Saturday when team visits Charleston in another MEC showdown. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
