Box Score WISE - - Glenville State outscored UVa-Wise 47-33 in the second half to post a 90-80 Mountain East Conference victory at the Prior Center Saturday. The victory was the fourth consecutive over a league opponent to start the year for the Pioneers as the team scored 90 or more points for the seventh time as the club improved to 6-2 overall.
UVa-Wise (4-2, 2-2 MEC) got off to a fast start as coach Kristin Kunzman's squad closed the opening quarter on a 9-3 run to take a 24-18 lead after the first 10 minutes. Blair Harding made three 3-pointers in the stanza while the Cavaliers made nine of 11 free throw attempts.
Glenville State would continue to trail throughout the second quarter as UVa-Wise continued to keep the guests at arm's length by use of the foul line. The Cavs made six second quarter free throws to take a 47-43 lead to the locker room.
A 3-point basket by Julie Jackson capped an 8-0 run to open the second half for Glenville State. The 3-pointer gave the Pioneers a 51-49 lead with 7:46 to play in the third quarter.
UVa-Wise would tie the game twice in the third quarter and enter the fourth period down only two at 66-64 when Allison Ball scored a fast break bucket off a Natalia Saar assist.
The Pioneers' up-tempo offense and full-court press finally took effect in the fourth period. Glenville State limited UVa-Wise to five of 20 shooting overall and a one for six showing from beyond the arc in the fourth quarter.
While the Cavs were struggling down the stretch, the Pioneers' offense was heating up. Glenville State shot 50 percent from the field in the final 10 minutes.
Glenville State built its lead to 14 points at 85-71 with 2:31 to play when Aanise Barnes scored inside.
UVa-Wise made one final push as Makenzie Cluesman scored inside before Kayla Carey split a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 11 with 1:57 remaining.
A Glenville State turnover and subsequent 3-pointer by Harding had cut the deficit to 85-77 with less than 90 seconds to play.
Paris McLeod would be fouled on the following possession and split two free throws to give the Pioneers an 86-77 lead with 47 seconds to play.
Two free throws by Harding would get UVa-Wise as close they would get at 86-80 with 34 seconds to go. The Pioneers would score the final four points of the game at the charity stripe to claim the road victory.
Carey led all players with 21 points and 11 rebounds, it marked the sixth consecutive game she has reached double figures in points. Harding added 19 points and five rebounds while Cluesman also had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds in defeat.
Jackson scored a team-high 16 points to lead a group of 12 Pioneers who cracked the scoring column in the win. Glenville State scored 27 points off of 24 UVa-Wise turnovers.
It was the first loss of the season for UVa-Wise at the Prior Center and the team's fifth consecutive setback to Glenville State.
The Cavs will be back in action next Sunday when the team entertains West Virginia Tech in a 2 p.m. tip.
