Alle Moore's Big Night Leads Cavs to Victory

WISE - - Freshman Alle Moore's game-high 16 points led a quartet of Cavaliers in double figure scoring as UVa-Wise cruised to an 87-56 Mountain East Conference victory over West Virginia Wesleyan at the Prior Center Thursday.

Making the first start of her collegiate career, Moore added eight rebounds as she went a perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe en route to her 16 points. The Marietta, Ohio native scored seven of her points in the opening period as UVa-Wise (4-1, 2-1 MEC) built a 23-13 lead after the first 10 minutes.

West Virginia Wesleyan (1-4, 0-3 MEC) struggled offensively all night. Playing without leading scorer Adrian Cunningham, the Bobcats made just seven of 21 field goal attempts in the opening half as the visitors fell behind 40-22.

The Cavs opened the second quarter on a 13-3 run to build a 34-16 lead with 5:14 to play in the quarter. Moore capped the scoring run with an offensive put back, the offensive rebound was one of eight collected by UVa-Wise in the half.

The Bobcats would be unable to get any closer than 15 points over the remainder of the half as eight different Cavs scored in the first 20 minutes. UVa-Wise out-rebounded Wesleyan 22-12 while winning the points in the paint battle 24-2 during the half.

The offensive onslaught continued for coach Kristin Kunzman's squad in the third period as the Cavs opened the quarter on a 15-5 run to take a 55-27 lead with just under five minutes remaining in the stanza. Again, it was Moore who was pivotal in the spurt as she scored seven of the 15 points.

A Blair Harding layup before the third quarter horn gave UVa-Wise a 41-point lead at 70-29 entering the fourth quarter.

The game's final period saw UVa-Wise freshman Dakotah Turner score her first collegiate basket as 11 players scored in the win.

Wesleyan would get no closer than 28 points in the period as the team shot just 31 percent from the field for the contest. The Bobcats' shooting woes carried over to the free throw line as Michael Berri's team made 12 of 20 attempts.

Kayla Carey joined Moore to form a formidable force inside. The duo combined to score 27 points, grab 17 rebounds and collect three steals. Carey's 11 points marked the fifth consecutive game that she has scored 10 or more points.

Harding made a 3-pointer mid-way through the third period, the make marked the 34th consecutive game she has made at least one 3-point field goal. The streak spans the entirety of her UVa-Wise career.

Junior guard Taylor Sandidge scored 12 points and collected a career-high five steals, Harding added 13 points to round out the double figure scoring for UVa-Wise.

Makenzie Cluesman scored nine points and added a game-high five assists off the bench. As a team, UVa-Wise assisted on 21 of the team's 33 made field goals.

The Cavs entered the game as the MEC leaders in rebounding margin and continued the stretch against the Bobcats by posting a 43-33 advantage on the glass.

Next up for UVa-Wise is a game against conference co-leader Glenville State on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. from the Prior Center.
