Cavs Dominate Second Half in 94-51 Win Over West Virginia Tech

WISE - - Four Cavaliers scored in double figures as UVa-Wise outscored West Virginia Tech 59-25 in the second half en route to a 94-51 non-conference victory at the Prior Center Sunday.

UVa-Wise's (5-2) Blair Harding scored 18 of her game-high 23 points in the second half, including all four of her 3-point field goals. Playing point guard, the Baltimore native added nine rebounds and six assists in her 35 minutes of play.

The Cavaliers dominated the interior in the win as starting post players Kayla Carey and Alle Moore combined for 20 points and 18 rebounds. Carey's 10 points and 10 rebounds marked the second consecutive game she has posted a double-double. It was the seventh straight game the junior has scored 10 or more points to start the season.

West Virginia Tech (4-7) lost the battle of the boards 67-44 in the loss, despite 15 rebounds from Breanna Propst. Propst added 11 points to finish with a double-double.

Kehana Grayer was also a force for the Cavs. The West Jordan, Utah product went 5-11 from the field as she scored 11 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and handed out five assists without committing a turnover in 31 minutes of play.

The first half of Sunday's contest saw sloppy play from both squads. UVa-Wise shot just 32.4 percent from the floor while West Virginia Tech made 27.3 percent of its field goal attempts. The highlight of the opening 20 minutes was the free throw shooting by the Cavs. UVa-Wise connected on 11 of 12 attempts in the first half as the team took a 35-26 lead to intermission.

The Golden Bears led by as many as five points in the opening half when LaKisha Adkins' 3-pointer found the bottom of the net at the 5:36 mark of the opening quarter. From there UVa-Wise would go on a 12-0 run to take a 20-13 lead, it would be lead coach Kristin Kunzman's squad would not relinquish.

Carey scored seven of her 10 points in the half as UVa-Wise built its lead to 13 on two separate occasions in the half.

A 27-point third quarter put the game away for the Cavs as Harding scored 12 points in the period to give her team a 62-39 lead with 10 minutes to play.

Every Cavalier newcomer scored in the game, freshman forward Dakotah Turner had the finest game of her inaugural collegiate season as she made all four of her field goal attempts  to score a season-high eight points. Turner added four rebounds, an assist and a block in six minutes of action.

Fellow freshman Adalmaryz Gomez played well also, the Bayamon, Puerto Rico native scored seven points, grabbed three rebounds, handed out two assists and blocked a shot from her point guard position.

After a poor shooting first half, UVa-Wise responded by shooting 54.5 percent from the floor in the second half to shoot 44.9 percent for the game.

Savannah Shamblin led the Golden Bears with 15 points while Adkins matched Propst's 11 points to round out the trio of double figure scorers for the visitors.

Next up for the Cavs is a home contest against King University next Sunday. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. inside the Prior Center.
