Men’s Basketball Not Strong Enough for No. 17 Lincoln Memorial University

Box Score HARROGATE, Tenn. – UVa-Wise men's basketball was outplayed in all facets of the game Saturday evening on the road at 17th-ranked Lincoln Memorial University, falling by a final score of 114-69. The Cavaliers (0-5, 0-2 MEC) only led once in the game against the nationally-ranked Railsplitters (4-1, 1-0 SAC) of the South Atlantic Conference and were out-rebounded 51 to 43.

UVa-Wise was only able to score 22 points in the paint compared to 42 by Lincoln Memorial. The Railsplitters outscored the Cavs 28-0 on points off turnovers and 50-20 in points off the bench.

Redshirt freshman shooting guard Camryn Fort (Fayetteville, N.C.) scored the first basket for the Cavs on a conventional three-point play, giving UVa-Wise a quick 3-2 lead at the 18:49 mark. However, the Railsplitters then went on a 9-0 run to make it 11-3 before a pair of Fort free throws cut it to 11-5 at the first media timeout.

Making three shots from beyond the arc, LMU used a 14-point scoring run to increase their advantage to 21 points at 29-8 with 11:02 remaining in the first half. A deep three-pointer from sophomore forward Dimitri Sousa (Sao Paulo, Brazil) ended the Railsplitters' run but a dunk by LMU's Tim Pierce kept the momentum with the home team.

Senior forward Matt Day (Buckhorn, Ky.) went on a 5-0 run himself, scoring on three-pointer and a jumper to cut the lead to 17 at 33-16 with 7:23 to go in the half.

Early foul trouble plagued the Cavs as both Fort and transfer junior forward Gervelle Kidd (Martinsville, Va.) each earned three personal fouls and UVa-Wise picked up its 10th team foul, putting LMU in the double bonus with 6:38 remaining in the half.

The Cavs closed the opening half on an 8-0 scoring run capped by a pair of free throws from junior forward Corey Dick (Whitsett, N.C.) to enter the locker room down 55-32. UVa-Wise only shot the ball at 27.8 percent (10-for-36) in the opening half, including going 3-for-17 from beyond the arc. The Cavs did go 9-for-12 at the foul line in the half but were out-rebounded 27 to 20.

The hot-shooting Railsplitters went 21-for-36 (58.3 percent) in the first half, going 6-for-13 from three-point land (46.2 percent).

Day led all Cavs in the half with 12 points and four rebounds followed by Owens with seven points and three assists, while Fort added five first-half points.

LMU came out in the second half and increased its lead to 30 (62-32) after a 7-0 run as the Cavs were sluggish in the opening two and a half minutes of the final stanza. A conventional three-point play by Day at the 16:51 mark decreased the Railsplitters advantage to 27 at 64-37, but that would be the closest the Cavs would get for the rest of the game.

A 10-0 scoring run by LMU ballooned the Railsplitters lead to 41 (82-41) with 12:26 remaining and UVa-Wise trailed by as much as 52 before all was done.

Redshirt freshman guard Lashain Matthews (Staunton, Va.) provided a nice spark off the bench as he hit back-to-back jumpers with a little over two minutes to go in the contest. Transfer sophomore guard Demarcus Edwards (Mount Vernon, Va.) scored his first points as a Cav, burying a three-pointer late in the game with under a minute to play.

All told UVa-Wise shot 31.1 percent (23-for-74), including only 16.7 percent (5-for-30) from behind the arc. One bright side for the Cavs was their free-throw shooting where they went 18-for-21 (85.7 percent).

LMU continued their hot-shooting throughout the entire game, finishing at 56.6 percent (43-for-76) and an outstanding 44.8 percent (13-for-29) from three-point range. The Railsplitters were only 15-for-27 (55.6 percent) from the charity stripe on the night.

Day was just short of his third double-double this season, finishing with 15 points, seven rebounds, two steals and a block to lead the Cavs. Despite picking up four fouls in the game Fort earned 12 points and three boards, while Owens contributed 10 points and three assists. Also earning four fouls Sousa was able to record eight points to go along with an assist and a steal.

Four Railsplitters scored in double figures as guard Jalen Steele led LMU with 18 points and seven rebounds on 7-for-10 shooting. Guards Gerel Simmons and Luquon Choice each scored 16 points, while Hunter Spaw added 14 of his own. Forward Dorian Pinson recorded 11 rebounds, nine assists and six points for the Railsplitters as forward Emanuel Terry had eight points on 4-for-4 shooting.

Following tomorrow's game the Cavs will return to Wise for a three-game homestand beginning with a non-conference matchup against National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Montreat College (N.C.) Monday at 7 p.m.
