SALEM, W.Va. - - The UVa-Wise men's tennis team wrapped up the fall portion of its season with an 8-1 road non-conference victory over Salem International Sunday. The victory improved coach Danny Rowland's squad to 3-3 this fall and sends the team to the spring as winners of three of their last four matches.
UVa-Wise swept doubles play as Ethan Herron and Andrii Rutnytskyi paired for an 8-3 victory in No. one doubles while Oleg Kopychenko and Viktor Tunnikov rolled to an 8-1 triumph in No. two doubles. Noah Aldridge and Chase Pollard faced the stiffest competition but, claimed an 8-6 win in No. three doubles.
The Cavs continued their winning ways in singles play as Rutnytskyi, Kopychenko, Herron, Tunnikov and Blake Pientka did not lose a set. Rutnytski did face a first-set tiebreak in No. one singles but the sophomore outlasted Salem's Landon Shultz-Zwahr 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 to win the match.
