Men’s Tennis Suffers 9-0 Setback against Bobcats

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The UVa-Wise men's tennis team suffered a 9-0 non-conference loss to the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan (3-0) Saturday at a neutral site, ending the Cavaliers (2-3) two-match win streak. Saturday's match was the Cavs first match away from Wise this fall non-conference season.

The Cavs fell behind 3-0 after doubles play as no pair from UVa-Wise was able to pull off a win. Both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles lost by identical scores of 8-3 with the duo of sophomore Andrii Rutnytskyi and freshman Ethan Herron falling at the top spot to West Virginia Wesleyan's Nathan Sabate and Ferran Berga, while senior Oleg Kopychenko and sophomore Viktor Tunnikov were topped at the second spot against the Bobcats' Ramon Rodriguez and Anthony Rames.

Sophomores Noah Aldridge and Charles Pollard were defeated 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.

In singles play it was more of the same. Kopychenko gave the Cavs the best chance to claim a team point in the match as he won five games off of Sabate of West Virginia State at the second singles position but ultimately lost 6-3, 6-2.

Aldridge took three games off of the Bobcats' Stephens at No. 5 singles but was defeated 6-2, 6-1. No other Cavs were able to claim more than two games in their matches as Rutnytskyi fell at No. 1 singles, Herron at the third spot, Tunnikov at No. 4 singles and freshman Blake Pientka at the sixth position.

The Cavs will have a quick turnaround before their next match, taking on Salem International University tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. in Salem, West Virginia. Tomorrow's match will mark the end of the fall non-conference season for the UVa-Wise men's team as the championship season with league matches will begin this spring and take place from February through April.
