Box Score WISE - - Saturday's game at the Prior Center between UVa-Wise and visiting Charleston featured 56 fouls, 78 foul shots, four players fouling out, and one team finishing the game with just five players. Charleston eventually outlasted UVa-Wise, 80-75 in overtime.
UVa-Wise (5-11, 4-6) raced out to an early nine point lead by making six first half 3-pointers. Blair Harding led the charge for the Cavaliers with 13 points in the first 20 minutes.
Charleston (12-4, 7-3) stayed in the game by getting to the free throw line and capitalizing on their opportunities. The Golden Eagles made 14 of 19 foul shots in the first 20 minutes to enter intermission trailing by two at 33-31.
The visitors spurted out to a 48-36 lead five minutes into the second half thanks to a 12-0 run. The Cavaliers would fall behind by as many as 15 points before making a run of their own.
Trailing 56-41 with 11:09 to play, UVa-Wise score 25 of the next 31 points to take a 66-62 lead with 3:48 showing on the clock.
The Cavs would hold the lead until Monet Saunders canned a pair of free throws to knot the game with 36 seconds remaining.
Both teams would get shots up in the final seconds but, neither squad could score forcing the game to overtime.
In the extra five minute session, Charleston scored the first seven points and never led by fewer than two possessions in securing the 80-75 win.
UVa-Wise starters Kayla Carey, Kehanna Grayer, and Taylor Sandidge all fouled out while Saunders was disqualified for Charleston.
For the game, the Golden Eagles made 32-44 free throw attempts while the Cavs made 24-34 charity shots.
Harding scored a game-high 28 points in defeat Carey recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Katie Jo Dockery made a pair of 3-pointers en route to 13 points in defeat.
LeAnne Ross made a game-high five 3-pointers to score a team-high 25 points for Charleston. Nichole Perry 14, Saunders 13, and Kiarra Johnson 11 also finished in double figure scoring in the league win.
