Hilltoppers Drop Cavalier Women

Box Score WISE, Va. – A frigid start for the home team and a huge second half run by the guests was the difference as West Liberty University knocked off U.Va.-Wise 76-58 Saturday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference women's contest.

West Liberty (15-8, 12-5) placed three players in double figures and got a nice game from sophomore guard Kailee Howell, who had 15 points, nine assists and seven rebounds in the win. Howell finished with 15 markers despite going only 3-for-4 from the floor, thanks largely to a 9-of-12 performance from the line.

The Hilltoppers also benefited from 14 rebounds by sophomore Kierra Simpson to lead them to a 43-32 edge on the glass.

The Cavs opened the game on silent, missing their first 10 shots from inside the arc and falling behind 22-6 after junior Jenn Mohney sank a three with 8:43 remaining in the half.

But Wise stormed back, scoring 15 of the next 16 points to get within a basket. Five different Cavaliers scored during the run, with freshman center Kayla Carey tossing in six, and when junior guard Katie Jo Lester sank two free throws, Wise was within two at 23-21 with 3:24 left in the half.

West Liberty took a 30-27 advantage to the half.

Wise opened the second half with consecutive baskets, and when freshman Taylor Sandidge scored on a layup 16 seconds into the half, the Cavaliers had their first lead of the game at 31-30.

A Carey layup with 17:08 left broke a tie and gave the Cavs a 35-33 lead, but the Hilltoppers quickly regained the lead, with ballooned to 63-45 after a pair of free throws by Howe with 7:04 to play.

Sandidge led the Cavs with17 points to go with four rebounds and a game-high three steals. Senior forward Reynesha Archer followed with 13, while Carey tossed in 12 while pulling down six boards off the bench.

Howe was joined in double figures by sophomore Jasmine Kiley, who led all scorers with 21. Freshman Colleen McCormick had 13 points and six rebounds off the bench.
