Box Score MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - - Sixth ranked Edinboro University lived up to its billing at the season opening Atlantic Region Challenge. The Fighting Scots completed the challenge with 78-65 win over UVa-Wise on Sunday to go 2-0 in the event.
UVa-Wise (0-2) would get a layup from Blair Harding early in the game to go up 5-4, it would be the last time coach Kristin Kunzman's squad would lead in the contest.Â
Leading 19-16 with 5:48 to play in the opening half, Edinboro (2-0) would go on a 7-0 run to build a 26-16 lead late in the first half. The Fighting Scots would eventually take a 32-25 lead to the locker room as the Cavaliers' Katie Jo Dockery made a 3-pointer late in the half to cut the lead to single digits.
Following an Anastasia Riabchenko bucket, Taylor Sandidge hit a 3-pointer to get UVa-Wise within six points. That would be as close as the game would get over the final 20 minutes as Edinboro would lead by as many as 21 points in the second half.
The Cavs would finish the game on a 7-1 run to get the game back to the final margin of 13 at 78-65.
Harding led UVa-Wise with 20 points. The junior also added six rebounds and five assists to her game-high point total. Sandidge added 18 points in the loss as the duo combined to make 11 of the Cavaliers 21 field goals in the contest.
UVa-Wise struggled with Edinboro's defense as the team hit 33.9 percent of its shots from the floor and 26.7 percent of its shots from beyond the arc.
Each starter for the Fighting Scots finished in double-figure scoring, led by Hope Mancini's 14. In large part due to its defense, Edinboro was able to overcome 24 turnovers and a 19-23 shooting performance by UVa-Wise at the foul line.
The Cavaliers will open up Mountain East Conference play on Saturday when the team visits Urbana University for a 1 pm tip.
