Box Score BREVARD, N.C. - First year Head Coach Kelly Burdeau's Brevard Tornados posted a 3-1 (25-21, 25-23, 22-25, 25-23) victory over UVa-Wise in the volleyball season opener for both schools on Thursday. Brevard's Fatima Gharachorloo led all players with 17 kills in the match while Erin Rollins, 13 and Camille Cameron 11 also had double digit kills in the win.
In the opening game, the Cavaliers (0-1) and Tornados (1-0) were tied at 10 midway through the game as UVa-Wise battled back from an 8-4 deficit. Brevard would answer with a run of its own as the host would post a 9-3 run to edge back out in front 19-13. The Tornados would hold off a rally by the Cavs that saw the visitors close the game to 24-21 before a kill by Rollins gave Brevard a 1-0 lead.
The second game would be decided late as Brevard and UVa-Wise would find themselves tied at 20-20. After trading points, Cameron would post back-to-back kills to give the Tornados a 23-21 lead. Cavalier freshman
Santana Bishop would then post one of her 11 kills on an assist from
Veronica Sanchez to cut the deficit to one. Brevard would recover and post the win as kills by Rollins and Jasmine Robinson would sandwich a service error for the 25-23 win.
Trailing 2-0, the Cavaliers seemed to be on the verge of a dropping a third game after falling behind 13-9. However, a 9-4 run by UVa-Wise would put the team in front 18-17. The two clubs would then trade points to a 22-22 tie only to see a pair of freshmen win the game for UVa-Wise. Bishop would give the Cavs the lead on a kill before
Karley Allen hammered two in to the court for a 25-22 win.
Game four was played very similar to the previous three as the game was tied at 22. Brevard would then break the tie with consecutive points as Gharachorloo and Savannah Cox posted kills off of assists from Kayla Hanus. Gharachorloo would then commit an attack error to give UVa-Wise hope at 24-23 only to recover and score the match's final point as Hanus again set her to give Brevard a season opening 25-23 victory.
Sanchez finished with a match-high 41 assists in the loss and Allen's collegiate debut saw her post a team-high in kills and digs with 14 each.
Lindsey Tucker added 13 kills to join Allen and Bishop with double digit kills.
The Cavs will return to play on Tuesday when the team visits longtime opponent University of Pikeville for a 7 pm start.
