Sanchez Eclipses 1,400 Career Assist Mark but Cavs Fall 3-2

Box Score PIKEVILLE, Ky. - - Host University of Pikeville ended a 10 match losing streak to UVa-Wise by posting a 25-23, 25-18, 19-25, 16-25, 15-13 victory on Tuesday.  The victorious Bears used 13 players in the match, nine of which played in all five sets to improve to 4-5 on the season.

UVa-Wise (0-2) appeared to be on its way to an easy first set victory after jumping out to a 5-0 start.  However, the host would respond with a 4-1 run and tie the score at nine before eventually taking a 13-12 lead.  The two schools would swap points and the lead for the remainder of the set until the Bears rattled off three consecutive points to gain a 22-19 lead, it would be a lead the team would not relinquish.   The Cavs would cut the lead to one at 24-23 as Veronica Sanchez set Karley Allen for one of her 26 kills.  UPike would finish the set on the next point as Chelsey Staples would score on a set from Haley Esquivel.

In the second set, the Bears would use a pair of runs to take a 2-0 lead.  Tied at 11, UPike would post a 6-2 run to secure a 17-13 lead.  Later in the set leading 21-18, the Bears would score four straight points to win the set.

With its back against the wall, the Cavs would begin a comeback in the third set.  Holding a 16-15 lead mid-way through the set, UVa-Wise would finish the set on a 9-4 run to cut the UPike lead to 2-1.  In the set, Sanchez would hand out 12 of her game-high 53 assists in aiding the Cavs to the set victory.

The fourth set was all UVa-Wise as Kristen Salyer's club would go on a 15-4 scoring run en route to the 25-16 win.   Again it was Sanchez at the center of the rally as she assisted on 15 of the 25 points scored in the set.  In the set, the junior eclipsed 1,400 career assists (1,419) joining Sam Puryea and Kendall Rainey as the only other Cavaliers in the exclusive club.

UPike and UVa-Wise would play a back-and-forth affair in the fifth and decisive set.  Neither side led by more than three points in the set and the two schools were tied at 13 late in the set.   The Bears would score the final two points of the match on back-to-back attack errors by the Cavs to end a 10 match losing streak to its former conference rival.

In the win, UPike's Sydney Morris posted a team-best 42 assists while the trio of Esquivel (12), Staples (11), and Sydney Hall (10) combined to post 33 kills.  Allen led all players with 26 kills in the loss while Brittni Altmann added a team-high nine digs.
