WISE - - Glenville State overcame an 11 point deficit and held off a late UVa-Wise rally to post a 78-76 win at the Prior Center on Saturday. The Pioneers' Lamar Mallory scored a game-high 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while also blocking three shots in aiding the guest to victory.
UVa-Wise (4-2, 2-2 MEC) jumped out to a 46-39 halftime lead due to hot first half shooting. The Cavaliers shot 50 percent from the field and Tyler Magged was a perfect 4-4 from beyond the 3-point line.
Glenville State (4-2, 2-2 MEC) began its comeback when UVa-Wise guard Javon Moore picked up his fourth foul with 19:46 to play in the contest. Moore would not return to the Cavalier lineup until 7:11 to play in the game with the Pioneers up one, 64-63.
The two schools would go back and forth over the next five minutes until the visitors took a seven point lead with 2:01 to play. UVa-Wise would not go down without a fight as Moore made two free throws to cut the lead to five before Deon Boyce grabbed a rebound, led the fast break and found James Turner for a layup to cut the lead to three at 77-74 with 1:09.
After each team traded defense stops, Moore scored from inside to cut the lead to one with 29 seconds to play. Glenville State's Reggie Williams would split a pair of free throws to make it a 78-76 lead with 16 seconds to play giving UVa-Wise a shot to tie or win the game.
On the next possession, Boyce would miss a shot from in the paint on an inbounds play with six seconds to play. Despite the miss, the Cavs would get another opportunity as Mallory would miss the front end of a one-and-one. Moore would race the length of the floor and fire a 3-pointer at the buzzer only to see it miss to the left, giving Glenville the victory.
Boyce finished with a second consecutive double-double as he scored 12 points and grabbed 18 rebounds. Moore scored a team-high 16 points while Maggard connected on five 3-pointers for 15 points.
Kevin Gray, 13, Jordan McCloud, 11, and J.J. Vasquez, 10 joined Mallory in double figuring scoring for Glenville State.
UVa-Wise will take a week off for exams before returning to play on December 17 when King University visits the Prior Center for "Kids Day 2013". Tip-off is set for noon.
