UVa-Wise Knocks off King for a Third Consecutive Time

Box Score

WISE - - UVa-Wise secured its third consecutive victory over King University with a 68-65 win over the Tornado at the Prior Center on Tuesday.  The win also keeps the Cavaliers undefeated on "Kids Day". This year's event brought more than 2,100 local students to the Prior Center while providing them with free admission and concessions.

The game featured six ties and 11 lead changes, the last coming with 2:46 to play when UVa-Wise's (5-2) Charles George drained a 3-pointer from the left wing to give the host a 66-65 lead.  Neither team would be able to score over the next two minutes as King (4-7) missed consecutive jump shots, the last with 37 seconds to play.  Trailing by one with under 30 seconds to play the Tornado were forced to foul and King Head Coach George Pitts elected to foul Jordan Smith.

The freshman from South Chesterfield, Va. went to the line and calmly drained both free throws of the one and one opportunity to extend the lead to 68-65.  From there, King called timeout for its final possession.  On the possession, Logan Lyle missed a 3-pointer with six seconds to play but, Drew Standifer grabbed the offensive rebound and kicked it out to Scottie Hendricks for one final shot.  Hendricks' attempt was no good as the buzzer sounded giving UVa-Wise the 68-65 win.

The win completes the season sweep of the series for the Cavaliers who also scored a 74-64 win in Bristol earlier this season.

King's Lyle led all players with 17 points and teammate Hunter LeVeau scored 13 points for the Tornado.  The visitors shot 12-14 from the charity stripe in addition to 13 made 3-pointers however, UVa-Wise out-rebounded King 41-27, including 18 offensive rebounds.

Boyce finished the game with 14 points and 10 rebounds while James Turner, 13, George, 12,  and Smith, 10 also finished the game in double figures for the Cavs.  As a team, UVa-Wise was a perfect 12-12 from the free throw line.

The Cavs' Javon Moore led all players with 11 rebounds; Moore also scored seven points and handed out six assists.

UVa-Wise will return to play on Saturday when the team travels to take on Lincoln Memorial University for a 4 pm tip.  A year ago, the Cavs knocked off the Railsplitters 81-80 in Wise.
