Golden Eagles Too Tough For Cavalier Volleyball

Box Score Wise, Va - - The UVa-Wise volleyball team played some of the best volleyball at home that we have seen all season in the loss to the University of Charleston (18-7, 10-4 MEC). Charleston would take the match (25-20, 21-25, 25-15, 25-20)

The Cavaliers (7-18, 2-11 MEC) stayed neck and neck with the Golden Eagles, coming back to make the score 13-13 after trailing 10-13. five straight points would then give them a 15-13 lead after a kill by Maya Hamlett on a set from Veronica Sanchez. The teeter-totter would continue until the scoreboard red 20-20 on a kill from Santana Bishop.  That's when the Golden eagles would run off five straight points to end the match 25-20. The last three being kills by Katharine Furlong, Victoria Severo and Claririssa Larry.

In the second set there was a slight momentum shift in the night. After the Cavs trailed 10-15 in the middle of the set a very strategic time out by coaches Kristen Salyer and Katie Van Hofwegen seemed to reenergize the Cavs. The Cavaliers would end up taking their first lead of the set 19-18 on a assist by Veronica Sanchez and a kill by Erin Anderson. From there the UVa-Wise women's volleyball team would not look back and take the match 25-21 on a kill from Maya Hamlett set again by Sanchez.

In the third set UVa-Wise came out fighting but could not hold on to a 10-9 lead after Karley Allen and Veronica Sanchez connected on two straight kill/assist combos. The Golden Eagles would from there put it on the Cavaliers and win the set 25-15.

The last set was much of the same back and forth. The Cavs took a three point lead on a kill from Bishop making the score 11-8.  Katherine Furlong would later put Charleston up by three on an assist from Melissa Reyes making the score 19-16. The Cavaliers could not regain the lead, as an attack error on Simona Zduoba would end the set 25-20 in favor of the Golden Eagles.

The visiting Golden Eagles had much of a balanced attack with two players, Katharine Furlong and Victoria Severo having 13 kills apiece with Clairissa Larry adding 11 as well.  Melissa Reyes was the primary setter gaining 38 assists and leading both teams in that category.

The Cavaliers were led by Santana Bishop with 12 kills followed by Allen with 11 and Erin Lee with 10 respectively. Sanchez led the Cavaliers with 33 assists and Brittni Altmann led them in digs with 20.

The Cavaliers will return to action Saturday, November 9th at 10:00 am. The game  will be held in the Prior Center against the visiting West Virginia State Yellow Jackets. The game can be seen on the internet by going to www.uvawisecavs.com/showcase.
