Turner Scores Career-High 20 Points in Wire-to-Wire Win over Urbana

Box Score WISE - - James Turner scored a career-high 20 points and 10 players dented the scoring column as UVa-Wise improved to 3-0 with a 76-48 win over Urbana University at the Prior Center on Saturday.  The game was the inaugural Mountain East Conference contest for both schools.

The Cavaliers (3-0, 1-0 MEC) jumped out to an 11 point lead 11 minutes into the game.  Turner scored 10 of his 20 points in the stretch while Turner, Charles George, and Tyler Maggard all hit 3-pointers in the opening minutes.

The early onslaught would be too much for Urbana (0-4, 0-1) as UVa-Wise led by as many as 16 points in the half and took a 13 point lead to halftime.  The Cavs dominated every facet of the game in the half as the host out-rebounded the visitors 27-15, out-shot the visitors 13 made buckets to eight, and on defense as the Blue Knights shot just 30.8 percent in the half (8-26).

UVa-Wise put the game out of reach in the opening moments of the second half as a Matt Day steal and layup by George extend the lead to 41-23 with 17:34 remaining.  Urbana would not get closer than 13 points at any point in the second half and trailed by 32 points with just under seven minutes to play.

George (12) and Day (10) combined to score 22 points as they joined Turner in double figures.  The Cavs made a season-high 10 3-pointers in the win and assisted on 20 of the club's 27 made shots.  Pape Mor Sall finished with a career-high five blocks and freshman Brian Sydnor scored nine points and claimed six rebounds in 19 minutes of work.   Deon Boyce led all players with 11 rebounds.

UVa-Wise never trailed in the game and received 23 points from its bench.

Casey Baker led Urbana with 14 points and seven rebounds while Danny Goins scored 13 points while adding three assists.  As a team, the Blue Knights made just 15-46 shots in the game (32.6 percent) while losing the rebounding battle 44-29.

The Cavs will return to play on Monday when Notre Dame College visits the Prior Center for a 7:30 pm tip-off.  The Falcons claimed a 92-82 league victory over Concord University on Saturday.
