Mellinger Victorious in Coaching Debut as Cavs Upend Tornado

Box Score BRISTOL, Tenn. - - Visiting UVa-Wise used a pair of double-doubles from Deon Boyce and Matt Day to spoil preseason Conference Carolinas favorite King University's home opener by posting a 74-64 win on Sunday.  The victory was the first for Cavalier Head Coach Blake Mellinger who assumed the position earlier this week.

King University (0-1) scored the first three points of the game on a 3-pointer by Scottie Hendricks, it would be the last lead the Tornado would have in the contest.  UVa-Wise (1-0) would lead by as many 12 points in the opening half as the Cavalier defense limited the Tornado to just 25.9 percent shooting in the first half (7-27).  UVa-Wise's perimeter defense was even more impressive in the opening half as King connected on just 12.5 percent of its 3-point attempts (2-16).

Boyce spurred the offensive attack in the first half with 11 points and six rebounds.  Returning leading scorer Javon Moore was limited to just seven minutes in the opening half due to foul trouble.  Day added six points and five rebounds in the opening half while Charles George scored seven points and grabbed three rebounds.

The Cavs continued the onslaught in the second half and reached its largest lead of the game on a George free throw to gain a 58-35 lead with 10:18 to go in the game.  From that point, the Tornado mounted a comeback attempt.  King cut the lead to 65-57 with 4:58 to play on a 3-point basket by Hunter LeVeau.

It would be as close as the host would get as UVa-Wise quickly built the lead back up to 12 on four consecutive made free throws.    Following a turnover, the Cavs would put the finishing touches on the game when Moore found Boyce wide open under the basket for a dunk to give UVa-Wise a 71-57 lead.

George and Day finished the game by knocking down pivotal free throws to give the Cavs the winning margin of 74-64.

Boyce finished with 18 points and 16 rebounds while Day added 13 points and 11 rebounds.  Moore tied Boyce for game-high scoring honors with 18 points while also adding four rebounds.  George scored 16 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and handed out three assists from his point guard position.  Senior James Turner limited King leading scorer Logan Lyle to 12 points in the game while limiting him to just two of seven shooting behind the arc.

The Cavs will return to action on November 20th, when the team plays its home opener against Virginia University-Lynchburg.
