BRISTOL, TN -- In an incredible display of serving, the Clinch Valley College women's volleyball team drubbed arch-rival King College last Wednesday, October 5 as they swept three games in a row of a best three out of five series plus a fourth scrimmage game. The lady Cavaliers only gave up 31 points out of a possible 60 in the four games as they defeated their foes 15-4, 15-11, 15-5, and 15-11.
An exuberant coach Stephanie Pierce praised the team's effort highly in post game comments to the Highland Cavalier. "The team was great tonight. They set well and spiked well. The close knit teamwork produced very few mistakes and hardly any illegal hits. Every member of the team scored at least one point during the match and each one added to the team effort with solid setting and saves."
In the first game, a 15-4 drubbing of the Blue Tornadoes, the team made a tremendous cooperative effort as demonstrated by the scoring being divided among five of the six starters.
Geri Lynn Wallace lead the team with five total points in the game including a four in a row spree on her first turn serving.
Jennifer Yates followed with 4 points all scored in a row on her serve.
Jill Adams added three in a row from the service line as well.
Donna Carter and
Maureen Meadows rounded out the scoring with 2 points and 1 point respectively.
Linda Walker, who was the sixth starter, was credited with several saves and setting assists.
The second game was closer but CVC still proved to be the superior team as they won 15-11.
Geri Lynn Wallace again led the scoring with 6 points including a four point effort on her serve.
Donna Carter shared the scoring honors in the second game with a strong four point performance on her opening serve.
Linda Walker kept the strong serving effort alive with three points on her service turn.
Jill Adams, and
Maureen Meadows each contributed one point to the winning cause. Solid support in setting and saves were seen on the part of the entire team. Lonnie Goldman,
Delcina Wilkerson, and
Jennifer Yates added capable performance to the team's efforts in this game.
The third game of the best three of five game series belonged to
Donna Carter. In an amazing display of serving Donna captured six straight points and went on to gain five more for a total of eleven out of the possible total fifteen points in the game as CVC won 15-5.
Delcina Wilkerson added three of the remaining four points needed for victory on her serve.
Lennie Goldman added a single point to sew up the scoring.
Jill Adams,
Jennifer Yates, and
Geri Lynn Wallace, the teams core starters for each of the official games of this match, added significant efforts in setting and defense. These three experienced players never left any of the games during the match.
Kathy Barnette alternated with Goldman and added capable support play.
The fourth and find game of the match was a scrimmage played at King's request. Again CVC came out on top 15-11 to make it a clean sweep of the evening.
Linda Walker shared the scoring lead for the Cavaliers with six points, four of which came in a row from the service line.
Delcina Wilkerson also added six with five in a row during her service.
Kathy Barnette added two and
Lennie Goldman one in contest.
Maureen Meadows and
Jennifer Yates also saw action in this scrimmage.
