WISE -- October has proven to be a busy month for the CVC Women's Varsity Volleyball Team as the Lady Cavaliers were pitted against some of the toughest opposition of their season. Bluefield College, Roanoke College, King College, Radford, Emory and Henry, and Virginia Intermont all faced CVC's finest in volleyball during the Halloween month leaving only the Milligan Tournament on October 28 and 29 and a final home match against Milligan on November 1. The "heart of October" matches left the Cavaliers with a break even 4 wins, 4 losses record for the season.
On October 7, the women traveled to Bluefield College where they shellacked the Rams three games in a row in a best three of five series 15 to 3, 15 to 8, and 15 to 6. In the first game,
Donna Carter dominated the bunch from Bluefield with 9 points on her service.
Maureen Meadows added two points,
Geri Lynn Wallace added one, and
Jennifer Yates contributed three points to the CVC winning pause.
Jill Adams and
Linda Walker rounded out the starting six and
Delcina Wilkerson added substitution depth for Walker. In the second game
Geri Lynn Wallace led the scoring with 9 points with contributions of 2 points from
Maureen Meadows, 2 points from
Jill Adams, and one point apiece from
Jennifer Yates and
Linda Walker.
Delcina Wilkerson and
Lennie Goldman also appeared in the game for CVC. The final game of the match found
Jill Adams leading the Cavaliers with a seven point performance. Cathy Barnette added 3 points,
Jennifer Yates 2 points,
Maureen Meadows 2 points, and
Donna Carter 1 point.
Delcina Wilkerson also contributed to the effort with effective setting. Coach Stephanie Pierce commended the team's overall performance and also complimented the opposition, Bluefield College, for their play in their first year of varsity volleyball.
Roanoke College proved to be an altogether tougher team to handle in their October 11 bout with the Cavaliers as CVC fell in three games after driving 4 1/2 straight hours to get to the match. The Clinch Valley squad fell 15-4, 15-4, and 15-7 but went on to defeat Roanoke in two post-match scrimmages.
Donna Carter led CVC scoring in all three games with 2,3, and 5 points respectively.
Maureen Meadows added 1 point in game one and another in game two.
Jill Adams scored 2 in the third game.
Jennifer Yates added a single point in foe first game. Coach Fierce noted the abundance of talent on foe Roanoke team and also pointed to their schedule which includes some of the largest universities in foe state. "Our girls played good volleyball", said Coach Pierce, "but Roanoke returned everything we sent across the net."
The lady Cavaliers gained a split in their next home match on October 14 as they defeated King College and lost to Emory and Henry. (Individual stats were inadvertently omitted from this match)
In one of their most exciting matches of the season on October 25 as CVC lost two close rounds to Virginia Intermont and Radford College. The Cavaliers lost two straight to VI but fought ail foe way. The first game was a 15-10 respectable loss.
Donna Carter led the squad with 4 points.
Delcina Wilkerson added two points while
Lennie Goldman,
Geri Lynn Wallace,
Jennifer Yates and
Jill Adams each scored a single point. The second game proved to be an exciting battle of almost equally strong teams but still CVC fell 17-15 in the final points. Strong team play was evidenced by the balanced scoring attack led by
Geri Lynn Wallace with 5 points and contributions of 4 points each by
Jennifer Yates and
Jill Adams.
Linda Walker added two to round out foe scoring effort.
Against Radford the CVC women showed continued strength as they pushed the larger school's team to three games before falling. It was Radford by 15 to 7 in the first game, CVC by 15 to 6 in the second, and Radford by 15 to 7 in the third, In the first game
Donna Carter and
Geri Lynn Wallace each scored three while
Jill Adams added one.
Geri Lynn Wallace led the team with 5 points in the second game.
Donna Carter followed close behind with 4 points,
Lennie Goldman scored 2 points,
Linda Walker added 3, and
Jennifer Yates added 1 in the Cavaliers only win of the evening, In the third game CVC had problems getting on the scoreboard.
Donna Carter led the squad again with 3 points.

Bluefield College's visit to the CVC campus on October 26 turned the tide back in the Cavaliers favor. Excited and working hard for the upcoming Milligan Invitational Tournament the lady Cavaliers trounced Bluefield in three straight games 15-8, 15-7, and 15-5.
Geri Lynn Wallace led the CVCers in game one with a 7 point effort.
Delcina Wilkerson put in one of her best performances of the season adding four points to the cause.
Donna Carter added 2 and
Jennifer Yates and
Linda Walker each added one. In the second and third games
Jill Adams led the CVC volleyballers as she went on a 13 point scoring spree mainly as the result of hard, consistent serving.
Donna Carter added 4 points to Adams 6 point effort in the second game. Cathy Barnette pushed over 3 points and
Geri Lynn Wallace sowed 2 points. The third game found
Geri Lynn Wallace and
Delcina Wilkerson both contributing 3 points each behind Adams 7 point lead with
Jennifer Yates and
Linda Walker each adding one.
