Zach Lewis is in his fourth season as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at UVA Wise. Last fall, UVA Wise quarterback Lendon Redwine set a school record with 246 pass completions under Lewis’ tutelage. Overall, the Cavalier passing game was tops in the South Atlantic Conference at 271.5 yards per game while ranking 21st in NCAA Division II.
UVA Wise also experienced a resurgence in the running game in 2021 as Jaevon Gillespie picked up second-team all-conference honors after he rushed for eight touchdowns while averaging five yards a carry.
In the shortened COVID spring season of 2021, the Cavaliers had their best offensive performance under Lewis as the unit passed for 356.7 yards per game while averaging 465 yards of offense per game. UVA Wise capped the season with a 40-point outburst in a win at Mars Hill.
In 2019, Lewis' offense saw seven players reach double-digit reception totals as Cavalier quarterbacks completed 176 passes.
The coach came to UVA Wise after having the same position at Alderson Broaddus.
“I’m very excited to announce Zach Lewis as our offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach,” Head Coach Dane Damron remarked shortly after his hiring. “He is a high-energy guy that will inject a new attitude and bring enthusiasm to our offense.”
At Alderson Broaddus, Lewis oversaw a Battlers’ offense that ranked 23rd nationally in scoring at 40.4 points per game. AB rushed for 189.4 yards per game while passing for 256 yards a contest in 2018.
Under Lewis’ direction, student-athletes established five new school records at AB as the coach served as the school’s offensive play caller.
A four-year starter at Moorehead State University, Lewis set school records for passing yards, completions and touchdowns during his collegiate career.
As a coach, Lewis spent four years at his alma mater where he worked as the slot receivers coach and video coordinator in 2014 before overseeing recruiting and directing quarterbacks for three seasons.
While at Moorehead State, Lewis helped develop conference player of the year Austin Gahafer who passed for a league record 11,918 yards during his career. The Eagles led the Pioneer Football League in passing offense in 2015 and 2016 while also leading the conference in passing touchdowns in back-to-back seasons.
A 2014 graduate of Moorehead State, Lewis obtained a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education. Lewis and his wife Alyson currently reside in Wise with their dog, Beau.
