The University of Virginia's College at Wise Athletics

John Chalupa is in his second year as the baseball program's pitching coach. A year ago, Chalupa's staff posted an ERA of 8.32; prior to Chalupa's arrival, UVA Wise's team era was 14.41 in 2021. The pitching staff also saw its strikeout numbers improve as Cavalier hurlers fanned 284 hitters in Chalupa's first year on staff compared to 118 in the previous season.

The coach comes to UVA Wise after spending the last two seasons as the pitching coach at Lake Erie College in Painesville, Ohio.

The coach has also spent time working with Kings Baseball Academy in Airmont, New York while also working with Max Velocity Pitching in Haverstraw, New York.

“Coach Chalupa is very passionate about developing pitchers,” Head Coach Brandon Costa stated after Chalupa was hired. “He will impact our program immediately with the young pitching staff we have coming in.”

Chalupa pitched collegiately at Fairleigh Dickinson University before pitching professionally for the Alpine Cowboys in the Pecos League.

The coach obtained a bachelor’s degree in biology from Fairleigh Dickinson University.
