SALISBURY, NC – The UVA Wise volleyball team picked up their first South Atlantic Conference win of the season as they overcame a determined Catawba squad by a 3-2 margin Saturday afternoon, taking the match 25-17, 13-25, 25-15, 24-26, 15-8. The Cavaliers finished with 48 kills, 12 aces and a .152 hitting percentage while the Catawba Indians had 45 kills, six aces and a .124 hitting percentage.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
- The Cavs won the opening set 25-17 after turning a 7-6 deficit into a 12-7 lead with six straight points on
Annabelle Dowell's serve.
- The Highland Cavaliers recorded eight kills to the Catawba Indians' five, led by three from
Skye Williams and two each from
Riley Brandon and
Mable James.
- Catawba committed five service errors, including the set-ending point, while the Cavaliers had two service errors in the set.
Second Set
- The Catawba Indians won the set 25-13 after scoring the first four points and later putting together a six-point stretch to reach 24-11.
- The Cavs finished with six kills in the set, led by
Isabella Baylor and
Mia Poag with two apiece.
- Catawba recorded 12 kills, including four from Alani Kincaid, and added two service aces.
Third Set
- The Cavaliers won the set 25-15 after turning a 10-9 deficit into a 15-10 lead with a six-point run.

Mia Poag served five straight points during that stretch, including an ace, while the Highland Cavaliers also got back-to-back assisted blocks from
Skye Williams and
Mable James, then
Riley Brandon and
Mable James.
- The Cavs recorded 13 kills in the set, led by four from
Skye Williams and three apiece from Brandon,
Annabelle Dowell and Poag.
Fourth Set
- The Catawba Indians won the fourth set 26-24, scoring the final two points after the teams were tied at 24-24.
- The Cavaliers opened a 7-1 lead with aces from
Madilyn Pardue and
Mia Poag, but Catawba later scored five straight points to tie the set at 15-15.

Mia Poag led the Cavs with six kills and two service aces, while Pardue finished with 12 assists and two aces; Catawba held a 15-14 edge in kills.
Fifth Set
- The Highland Cavaliers won the decisive set 15-8 to finish off a 3-2 match victory.
- UVA Wise recorded seven kills to the Catawba Indians' four, with
Mia Poag finishing with three kills in the set, including the final point.

Madilyn Pardue assisted five Cavs kills and added back-to-back service aces that moved the set score to 14-6.

Mia Poag led the Cavaliers with 14 kills, hit .433 and added four service aces for 18 points.

- This was the fourth straight win by the Cavs in the overall series. Catawba leads the series 5-4.
UP NEXT
The Highland Cavaliers will have a home match for the first time this season as they host Coker on Thursday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. in the Prior Center. It will be the first of a three-match homestand for the team and Friday's match will be Alumnae Appreciation Day as part of the College's Homecoming festivities.
