Wolves Take Season Sweep From UVA Wise

NEWBERRY, SC – The UVA Wise softball team and Newberry had 17 hits apiece, but in the end the Wolves took both games of the South Atlantic Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon.

GAME ONE – Newberry 3, UVA Wise 2
- The Cavaliers and Wolves faced off in a tightly contested game. In the second inning, Madison Anglin scored when Adyson Gibson walked with the bases loaded, giving the Cavaliers an early lead. The Wolves tied the game as Katie Henri scored on an error.
- In the third inning, Kaylynn Baker advanced to third on a single by Lindsey Polan and Taylor Noe's bunt single. Madison Anglin then hit a sacrifice fly, allowing Baker to score an unearned run, putting the Cavs ahead again, 2-1.
- The Wolves evened the score at 2-2 in the fifth inning when Brooke Crosby hit a home run.
- In the seventh inning, Newberry's Taylor Palfrey scored on a bunt single by Brooke Crosby, giving Newberry a 3–2 walkoff win.
- Chloe Murphy pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs while striking out four batters. She did not issue any walks and maintained a WHIP of 0.98, reinforcing her control on the mound. Olivia Shockley entered in relief, pitching two innings and conceding two hits and one earned run. Shockley threw 23 strikes out of 35 pitches, demonstrating effective strike-throwing despite the loss marked in the game.
- Adyson Gibson contributed by drawing a walk with the bases loaded, resulting in one RBI. Lindsey Polan delivered two hits and drew a walk, finishing with an OPS of 1.417. Taylor Noe collected two hits and executed a sacrifice hit.

GAME TWO – Newberry 5, UVA Wise 1
- In the second inning, the Cavaliers took an initial lead when Savannah Johnson hit a double to right center, driving in Mataya Ausmus, putting UVA Wise up 1-0. However, Newberry responded strongly in their half of the inning, scoring five runs. The rally began with Payton Little's single and continued with Avery Ingram's two-RBI single, concluding with Samantha Clark's RBI single, putting the Wolves ahead 5-1 by the end of the second inning.
- Despite multiple efforts in subsequent innings, including hits from Taylor Clay and Johnson, the Cavaliers could not close the gap. The pitching change to Angelina Branch helped hold Newberry scoreless for the remainder of the game, but the early deficit could not be overcome as the Wolves took the 5-1 win.
- Olivia Shockley started the game and pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits and five earned runs, while striking out one batter and not issuing any walks. She faced 12 batters and threw 37 pitches, 29 of which were strikes. Angelina Branch took over in relief, delivering a strong performance over 4 1/3 innings. Branch limited Newberry to three hits, struck out one, and did not allow any runs or walks, maintaining a WHIP of 0.73 across her outing.
- Adyson Gibson posted two hits in her four at-bats, showcasing her effectiveness at the leadoff position. Kaylynn Baker recorded two hits and contributed four assists defensively from third base, demonstrating her dual impact. Savannah Johnson tallied two hits, including a double, and drove in one run, leading the team's offensive effort. Taylor Clay finished with three hits, maintaining a perfect batting average for the game.

UP NEXT
The team returns home to host Coker Tuesday afternoon at noon in a SAC doubleheader.
