Cavs Cruise to 80-71 Road Win Over LMU

HARROGATE, TN – The UVA Wise women's basketball team led for 34 minutes and pulled away in the third and fourth quarters as they defeated Lincoln Memorial in a key South Atlantic Conference game 80-71 Wednesday evening in the Tex Turner Arena.

This is the first meeting between the two schools this season and snaps a two game losing streak to the Railsplitters.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP
Result: UVA Wise 80, Lincoln Memorial 71
Records: UVA Wise (10-11, 7-10 SAC); Lincoln Memorial (9-12, 8-10 SAC)
Location: Harrogate, TN | B. Frank Turner Arena

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cavs took the tip and Ella Karst scored nine seconds later with a pull-up jumper off a pass from Makenzie Bremer. LMU then scored five unanswered points to take the three-point lead. It would be their largest of the game as UVA Wise went on a 6-2 run to retake the lead and they later led by as much as seven late in the quarter.
- LMU cut the lead to two points to open the second quarter, only to see Sable Burnside and Macie Ridge score five quick points to put the lead back to seven points. The Railsplitters cut the lead to one point with 5:43 left in the half, but UVA Wise extended the lead back to eight late and held the 40-35 advantage at the half.
- LMU chipped away and took the lead for about a minute and a half mid-way through the third quarter. The teams swapped baskets for the next few minutes before back to back three-pointers by Emilea Preece and Alissa Cheek in the final minute of the quarter gave the Cavs the lead for good.
- The Cavs built upon their lead, going to 10 points twice in the fourth quarter. LMU could never mount a serious comeback, only getting within three points with less than a minute left before the Cavs closed out the game on an 8-2 run to take the 80-71 win.

GETTING WISE
- Four players scored in double figures, led by Ella Karst's game high 19 points. Caroline Mullins scored 17 points, Sable Burnside had 13 points, and Alissa Cheek chipped in 12 points.
- Emilea Preece led all players with eight rebounds, while Mullins and Karst had five apiece.
- Cheek led the team with four assists.
- The Cavs shot a season-high 56.4 percent from the field, while holding LMU to 39.3 percent. They also shot 42.9 percent from behind the arc and won the rebounding battle 34-32.

UP NEXT
The Cavs will return home for the first time in February to host Limestone Saturday afternoon as it's time to Play4Kay in the annual game uniting fans and players in support of breast cancer survivors and the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, which supports and raises funds for advanced cancer research. It is named in honor of former NC State head coach Kay Yow, who passed away in 2009 after a 22 year battle with cancer.

The organization also sponsors the Kay Yow Servant Leader Award, which honors her legacy and the young people who carry the fight forward. It is presented annually to student-athletes who best embody the characteristics of Coach Kay Yow – people with a servant's spirit and a commitment to selfless leadership both on and off the court. One of this year's Servant Leaders is sophomore guard Jalie Ruehling.

The day will also be Cavalier Community Fan Day, and admission is free to the public. Fans are encouraged to wear pink for the Play4Kay game.
