Bats Heat Up Against Bluefield State in Baseball Season Opener

WISE – The UVA Wise bats were as hot as the temperature was cold as the Highland Cavaliers opened the 2025 baseball season with a sweep of Bluefield State Saturday afternoon.

They took the first game 7-3 after a six run fifth inning that included a triple from Joshua Morgan and a home run from Jake Weaver. Game two saw the Cavs take the lead in the first inning and never look back as they scored seven runs in the fourth and thirteen runs in the sixth and defeated Bluefield State 23-1.

GAME ONE
The Blues scored first with a run in the second inning and two more in the third.

UVA Wise got on the board in the bottom of the third when DJ Dickson scored from second on the RBI single by Jake Smith.

The Cavs tacked on six more runs in the fifth inning as Nick Badgett and Dickson both scored on a triple by Morgan. Morgan then scored on a sacrifice fly by Smith. Later in the inning with runners at second and third, Weaver blasted a three run homer over the right field fence, putting the Cavs ahead 7-3.

Bo Trantham earned the win for the Cavs as he went two innings in relief and allowed no hits or runs while striking out three batters.

Morgan and Weaver led the Cavs with two hits and a run apiece, with Weaver tallying three runs batted in and Morgan knocking in two runs.

GAME TWO
Nick Badgett hit a solo home run in the first inning to start things rolling. The Cavs scored again in the second as Morgan Miller crossed the plate.

Bluefield State scored in the top of the third, which was answered by Morgan scoring via a Jaden Ruehling single in the bottom of the inning.

In the next inning, the Cavs plated seven runs, including three off a double up the center by Micah Hill.

The score stood until the bottom of the sixth, when the floodgates opened and UVA Wise had thirteen runners cross the plate. Five scored from singles, three via the fielder's choice, four from walks with the bases loaded, and one via an error.

Hunter Garrett claimed the win for the Cavs as he pitched two innings in relief, allowing only one hit and striking out three BSU batters.

Every batter for UVA Wise got a hit and at least two runs in the game, with Miller and Badgett each tabbing four runs batted in.

UP NEXT
The two teams face off again tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
