Highland Cavaliers Push School-Record Winning Streak to Eight with 91-85 Decision at Newberry

NEWBERRY, SC -- UVA Wise won their eighth straight game as they took a double-digit lead over Newberry and kept the Wolves at bay to earn the 91-85 South Atlantic Conference victory Saturday afternoon at Eleazer Arena. The Cavaliers capitalized on the Wolves' 20 turnovers, scoring 21 points off turnovers to secure the win.

The eight-game winning streak is the longest school history. It is also the most wins in a row since a seven-game streak in the 2009-10 season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first half began with UVA Wise's Yoro Diallo scoring a jumper just 20 seconds into the game. Newberry quickly responded with a layup by Drake Downs. The teams exchanged leads six times, with the Cavs' Kam Roberts scoring multiple points in the paint, including a dunk at the 14:28 mark. Newberry's Drew Robinson kept the score close with two 3-pointers, but a late scoring push by UVA Wise, highlighted by Calen Lightford's free throws, allowed them to end the half ahead 44-38.
- UVA Wise extended their lead early in the second half with a fast-break dunk by Diallo at the 19:30 mark, followed by a 3-pointer from Roberts, assisted by Evan Ramsey. Despite the Wolves' attempts to close the gap, including a 3-pointer by Robinson at 18:12, the Highland Cavaliers maintained their margin. Roberts was instrumental with a layup at 18:17, pushing their advantage further. Newberry's effort to catch up included a series of successful free throws by Downs, but the Cavs' steady scoring, capped by Patrick Shelley's free throws with 19 seconds left, secured their 91-85 victory.

GETTING WISE
- Yoro Diallo led all scorers with a career-high 25 points. He also had five rebounds and a team-high three assists.
- Kam Roberts scored 19 points and had three rebounds, two steals, and two assists. 
- Patrick Shelley had twelve points, including a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line, and five rebounds.
- Calen Lightford also went 6-6 from the line and scored twelve points.   
- Evan Ramsey scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds. He also tallied four blocks.
- Three Wolves scored in double figures, led by Drake Downs.

UP NEXT
The Highland Cavaliers will continue SAC play as host Emory & Henry on Wednesday, Dec. 10. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. on The Quillen Court in the David J. Prior Convocation Center.
