Cavs Fall at #25 Carson-Newman 108-76

JEFFERSON CITY, TN – #25 Carson-Newman used an early run and 54 percent shooting from the field while holding off every challenge by UVA Wise as they went on to claim the 108-76 South Atlantic Conference win over the Highland Cavaliers Wednesday evening in Holt Fieldhouse.

The loss snaps a two game winning streak by UVA Wise.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles broke open a tie game with a 16-3 run to take the 18-7 lead midway through the first quarter. Another run extended their lead to fifteen late in the period. A pull-up jumper by Ella Karst in the paint cut the lead to 31-22 at the end of the first.
- Carson-Newman slowly extended the lead to 20 with 5:18 left in the half. A three-pointer by Jalie Ruehling with 2:14 left in the half sparked a Cavalier run that saw the lead down to twelve before a pair of free throws and a basket at the buzzer by C-N's Jennifer Sullivan put the lead at 56-40 at the intermission.
- The Eagles continued to build on the lead in the third quarter and led by 33 at the end of the third frame. Points by Madison Looney, Ella Karst, and Caroline Mullins allowed the Cavs to chip away at the lead, cutting it to 29 with 4:41 remaining. The teams then traded baskets for the rest of the period, with a basket from Ines Latapia putting the lead at 102-74 with 2:09 remaining, but the Eagles would hold on for the 108-76 win.
- Jennifer Sullivan led C-N with 29 points, including five three-pointers. Lindsey Taylor had a double-double with 16 points and ten rebounds, and Makayla Alvey had 14 points.

GETTING WISE
- Ella Karst led the Cavs with 17 points, while reigning SAC Player of the Week Sable Burnside chipped in 14 points.
- Caroline Mullins had a good night, going 4-4 from the field, 1-1 from three-point range, and 4-4 from the free throw line for 13 points.
- Madison Looney scored 10 points and led the team on the boards with five rebounds.
