Eagles Claw Past Cavs, 3-0

JEFFERSON CITY, TN – The match between UVA Wise and Carson-Newman was neck-and-neck from start to finish, but in the end the Eagles pulled out the 3-0 win over the Highland Cavaliers Saturday afternoon in Holt Fieldhouse.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP
Result: Carson-Newman 3, UVA Wise 0
Records: UVA Wise (6-6, 1-3 SAC); Carson-Newman (9-3, 5-0 SAC)
Location: Jefferson City, TN | Holt Fieldhouse

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles took an early 3-0 lead and eventually extended it to 19-12. Following a UVA Wise timeout a kill by Riley Brandon and Kamryn Livingston rotating in to serve sparked a 11-1 run that saw the Cavs take the 22-21 lead. Carson-Newman rallied and took advantage of Cavalier errors to steal the set, 25-22.
- There were several ties and lead changes in the second set, with the Cavs leading by four points on more than one occasion. They led 18-14 when the Eagles put together a 7-0 run of their own to grab the late lead. A kill by Mailea Hufnagel and an Eagle attack error pulled the Cavs to 24-23, but a lob over the front line blockers by C-N's Emerson Ahsmuhs ended the set, 25-23.
- The Eagles took a 5-1 lead in the third set and were able to slowly pull away as they went on to take the third set 25-13 and claim the match.
- Kaylee Scarce led the team with nine kills and 19 digs, while Piper Suddeth had 14 assists and seven digs. Brandon chipped in six kills, 12 assists, and six digs while Abigail Curtis had 11 digs.
- Ahsmuhs led C-N with nine kills. Bennett McCombs had 18 digs and Maddie Hurst had eight block assists.

GETTING WISE
- After having tied the record for career blocks in the NCAA era (281) with Santana Bishop yesterday evening, fifth-year player Cassidy Farley claimed the record for herself with a monster solo block that gave the Cavs the 13-9 lead in the second set. She then added to it on the next play with a block assist with Brandon and added a third solo block later. She ended the match with three blocks.
- Scarce passed the 800 digs mark Friday evening against Coker and is currently 17 kills shy of 700 for her career.
- Curtis had her 500th career dig in today's match, while Livingston passed the 600 digs mark for her career against Coker Friday evening.
