WINGATE, NC – The Highland Cavalier volleyball team bounced back from a low scoring first set and fought hard in sets two and three with Wingate Tuesday evening before falling 3-0 to the Bulldogs in a South Atlantic Conference contest.
They lost the first set 25-7, but came back in the second and third sets, falling 25-13 and 25-21, respectively.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wingate's Cuddy Arena is a very tough place to play as Bulldogs have a 208-9 record at home since the 2009 season coming into tonight's contest. The Bulldogs took an early 2-0 lead, but the Cavs tied it at 4-4 off a kill by
Morgan Blevins. Wingate then rolled out a 9-1 run that UVA Wise was never able to overcome as they fell 25-7.
- Similar to the first set, in the second set the Cavs came from behind to tie the match before Wingate pulled ahead midway through the match. UVA Wise cut the lead back to two on a pair of occasions, but the Bulldogs pulled away late for the 25-13 win.
- Set three was a back-and-forth affair, featuring 10 ties and eight lead changes. The last tie came at 18-18, but Wingate then went on a 4-0 run. The Cavs cut it to 24-21, but were unable to complete the comeback and fell 25-21.
- UVA Wise was led by
Riley Brandon as she had six kills to go along with four assists and four digs. Blevins chipped in four kills and four digs, while
Piper Suddeth had a team high eight assists to go along with 7 digs.
Abigail Curtis had a match-high 15 digs and five assists, while
Serina Petersen had a match-high five blocks.
- Wingate was led by Maya Van Heyst's eight kill and 21 assists to go along with five digs. Gabby Saye chipped in eight kills as well, while Sydney Moreland had seven. Maddie Hoffman led the Bulldogs with 10 digs.
UP NEXT
UVA Wise will return home after almost three weeks to face Coker in the home SAC opener for the Cavs. Coker come into the contest with a 3-6 overall and 2-2 conference record, with conference wins over Limestone and Newberry. The first serve in Friday's match is set for 6:00 pm on the Quillen Court at the David J. Prior Convocation Center.
