ATHENS, WV – There were several firsts on the June O. Shott Field at Callaghan Stadium Saturday afternoon. The first win for Coach
Gary Bass on the UVA Wise sidelines; the first win of the season for the Highland Cavaliers; and the first win in Athens for the Cavs since September 8, 2007. There were also 27 UVA Wise first downs, which the Cavs converted into 423 yards of offense and 28 points as they shut out Concord for the first time in program history, 28-0.

STATS OF THE GAME
- The Mountain Lions got a stop on UVA Wise's first drive, but on their own first drive Blayne Ferguson's pass was intercepted at their own 36 yard line by
Brub Hines III and returned to the seven yard line. Three plays later Cavs quarterback
Jake Corkren connected with
Dejauvis Dozier for the three-yard touchdown pass to put UVA Wise up 7-0.
- That score stood until late in the second quarter when Corkren found
Seth Fischbach open in the endzone for a ten-yard pass and a 14-0 lead at the half.
- Corkren added another ten-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, this time to
Isaiah Boyd to put the Cavs up 21-0.
- Concord was driving late in the third quarter when
Braxton McPherson intercepted the pass from Ferguson in the endzone and the Cavs drove the field for a drive capped by
DJ Powell's 17-yard rush to the endzone to give the Cavs the 28-0 lead.
- The Mountain Lions then had a drive stall at the Wise nine-yard line as they turned the ball over on downs.
- UVA Wise then went on a long clock-killing drive that ate up the last 10:33 of the game as they picked up their first win of the season.
- Corkren would finish the game with 276 yards passing as he completed 27 of 39 passes with three touchdowns.
- Fischbach finished the game with five catches for 64 yards and a touchdown, while
Dorien Goddard had nine catches for 78 yards. A pair of freshmen scored their first touchdowns for the Cavs as Boyd (4 catches, 25 yards) and Dozier (2 catches, 10 yards) both had touchdown receptions.

Ian Scammell had 10 carries for 47 yards and
Zavier Lomax rushed 15 times for 34 yards.

Jalen Pickens had a team-high nine tackles (seven solo), while
Emmanuel Scott had four tackles and two sacks.
- CU's Ferguson was 15 of 27 passing with two interceptions and three sacks.
-As a team the Cavs had 27 first downs, compared to 13 for Concord. The Cavalier defense also held the Mountain Lions to 244 total yards with no scores.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The win was the second in a row over Concord, with the last win coming in Wise on Sept. 15, 2018, as the Cavs won 35-20.
- This was the eleventh meeting in the series, with Concord holding a 6-5 advantage.
- Today's win was the third time the Cavs have won over Concord in Athens.
- The 423 yards generated by UVA Wise are the most since 440 yards against Barton last season.
UP NEXT
UVA Wise will host Catawba in the 2024 home opener next Saturday at 2:00 p.m. It will be the South Atlantic Conference opener for both teams. The Catawba Indians enter the game with a 1-1 record after a 37-28 win at Shaw earlier today.
Next Saturday is also the school's annual Lelia Maude Richmond Day, which honors the longtime UVA Wise "Number One Fan" with special events before kickoff.
