PIONEERS ECLIPSE CAVALIERS IN SAC DOUBLEHEADER

WISE – Tusculum University faced the UVA Wise softball team Monday afternoon in a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader rescheduled from last week, in the end the Pioneers prevailed in both contests.

GAME ONE:
- Softball has been described as a pitcher's game, and game one proved that as Tusculum's Emily Sappington controlled the game, striking out 13 batters and only allowing two walks and one hit.
- The Pioneers picked up runs in the third, fourth, fifth, and seventh innings to take a 13-0 lead.
- UVA Wise got on base in the bottom of the seventh when Sarah Barrett drew her second walk of the day with two outs.
- With Sappington only needing one out for her third career no-hitter, UVA Wise's Mallory McKnight hit a home run over the center field fence to plate two runs for the Cavs.

GAME TWO:
- UVA Wise took a 2-0 lead in the first from a home run by Brie Frazier and a Savannah Johnson RBI single that scored Kara Long.
- The Pioneers tied the game in the third inning.
- Tusculum manufactured runs in the fourth and fifth innings before breaking open the game in the sixth to take the 9-2 win.
- Johnson led the Cavs with two hits in game two. Long and Frazier each had a hit apiece.
 
UP NEXT
UVA Wise will step out of SAC play for the final time this season as they host Carolina University Wednesday afternoon at Pioneer Field, weather permitting. The Bruins enter the contest with a 19-15 record.
