LACROSSE NEVER TRAILS IN 14-13 THRILLER OVER LMU

WISE – The UVA Wise lacrosse team celebrated Senior Day as they faced local rival Lincoln Memorial University Saturday afternoon in a key South Atlantic Conference game at Beaty-Richmond Field at Carl Smith Stadium.

In a tight and very physical contest, the Highland Cavaliers never trailed as they held off a determined Railsplitter squad by a 14-13 margin.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Senior Taylor Willinghan put the Cavs ahead with the game's first goal with 11:08 on the clock. Less than three minutes later, Kaylea Paterson extended the lead with her 18th goal of the season.
- The teams then traded goals for the rest of the quarter, with an LMU goal being followed by Grace Golatt's 20th goal of the season, followed by another Railsplitter goal.
- Senior Mallory Trimble got things going in the second period with the first of her haul of goals as she scored with 13:31 left to put the Cavs ahead 4-2.
- The Railsplitters then scored twice more to tie the game for the first time on a pair of goals by Amber Kirkpatrick.
- Trimble, Leslie Clay and a pair of goals from Noley Hiller sandwiching scores by LMU would leave the Cavs with the 8-6 advantage at the half.
- Both teams would come out strong in the third quarter with goals by Hiller, Trimble (twice), and Logen Davis offsetting goals by LMU as UVA Wise extended the lead to 12-8 entering the fourth quarter.
- The Railsplitters then rolled off four goals to begin the final quarter and tied the game at 12-12 with 12:34 remaining.
- Issie Brown put the Cavs ahead 20 seconds later as UVA Wise won the draw and took it in for the score.
- LMU would once again tie the game as Josie Tinnerello netted her fifth goal of the day to tie the contest once again with 7:14 left.
- After a LMU turnover, Davis took the ball all away around the goal and scored from the corner to put UVA Wise ahead 14-13 with a little over two minutes remaining. LMU had a couple more attempts to score but a late turnover sealed the win for the Cavs.

GETTING WISE
- Trimble's four goals mark the second time this season she has scored that many goals in a game.
- Hiller's hat trick marks the third time this season she had scored three or more goals in a game.
- Brown and Senior Page Volpone each had four ground balls to lead the team. In addition, Volpone also caused four turnovers.
- Senior Olivia Toomer went the distance in cage for her seventh win of the season. She had six saves in the contest.
UVA Wise out-shot LMU 32-24 and went 15-19 in clears, compared to 9-17 for the Railsplitters.
 
UP NEXT
The team hits the road for the final time this season as they travel next Saturday to Catawba for their penultimate regular season game. First draw between the Cavs and the Catawba Indians is set for 3:30 pm in Salisbury, North Carolina. They then return home for the regular season finale vs. Tusculum on April 17. That game will be the yearly Morgan's Message Game, in which the team will highlight and raise awareness of mental health issues.
