CAVS VICTORIOUS IN THIRD CONSECUTIVE SAC SERIES

WISE -- The University of Virginia's College at Wise Baseball Team continued their winning ways this weekend with a third consecutive series win, this time over the visiting Cobras of Coker University. In a pivotal South Atlantic Conference series between two upstart programs the Cavs swept the Saturday doubleheader, before falling to Coker University in game three. UVA Wise scored first and never looked back in games one and two sweeping the doubleheader by scores of 4-2 and 3-0. Coker responded for the game three victory 5-3.

GAME ONE:
- Nick Badgett got the scoring started with a lead off solo home run, his second of the year.
- UVA Wise added single runs in the 5th inning and 7th inning on a DJ Dickson RBI single and a Jake Weaver solo home run, to increase their lead to 3-0 after 7 innings.
- The Cavs got 7 innings of shutout pitching from starter Justin Snider, who allowed only 5 hits while striking out 6, as he out-dueled Coker ace Aaron Diaz, the league ERA leader among starting pitchers.
- Hunter Anderson escaped jams in the 8th and 9th innings to pick up his 5th save of the season, tying the UVA Wise career saves record in the process with 13 (record currently shared with David Jones '08).
- The Cavs got an insurance run on Cole Harness' SAC leading 10th home run of the season in the 8th inning.
 
GAME TWO:
- Morgan Miller delivered for the Cavaliers with a 2-out, 2-RBI single in the 4th inning putting the Cavs ahead 2-0.
- Jeb Hurst added an RBI triple in the 5th inning to make the score 3-0.
- Daniel Kanagy, in his first start of the 2024 campaign, delivered with 5 shutout innings, allowing just 3 hits while striking out 3 to earn the win on the mound.
- Braden Hamilton threw a scoreless 6th inning to pick up a hold, while Spencer Powell threw a scoreless 7th inning to earn his first career save.
 
GAME THREE:
- Coker jumped out to a 4-0 lead early when Ick Cirino doubled to left field in the 2nd inning driving in two. In the 3rd inning, Gabe Santiago doubled driving in a run and came around to score on a Corbin Wright safety squeeze.
- The Cavs chipped away with a Nick Badgett RBI ground out in the 3rd inning. Jaden Ruehling and Jake Weaver drove in runs in the 4th to cut the lead to 4-3, but that was as close as the Cavs would get.
- Nash Bingham, had his best outing of the season, in relief for UVA Wise, throwing four scoreless innings while allowing just two hits and striking out three.
- Benjamin Blackwell, threw the final five innings for Coker to earn the win, as he held the Cavaliers to just three hits and no runs over the final five frames.
 
UP NEXT
UVA Wise will host Lenoir-Rhyne University Tuesday at 3:00 PM at Stallard Field in non-conference action. The Cavs will then travel to take on the Wolves of Newberry College in a three-game South Atlantic Conference series scheduled for Friday and Saturday in Newberry, South Carolina.
