WISE – The UVA Wise softball team would battle back multiple times to tie the game or cut the Anderson lead to one run, but in the end the Trojans prevailed and won both games of the South Atlantic Conferencr doubleheader at Cavalier Field Saturday afternoon.
GAME ONE:
- Anderson scored first, netting three runs in the third inning. This was backed up by a strong pitching performance from Laken Maxwell, who had six straight strikeouts to begin the game.
- The Highland Cavaliers broke through in the fourth inning, with
Adyson Gibson leading things off with a single down the left field line. Eventually the bases were loaded and the Cavs scored twice from back-to-back RBI walks to cut the lead to 3-2.
- The Trojans pulled ahead again in the fifth as two runners crossed the plate.
- In the bottom of the inning
Kara Long blasted a two run home run over the center field wall, scoring herself and
Brie Frazier to cut the lead back to one.
- After Anderson scored three more runs in the sixth inning UVA Wises's
Savannah Johnson would hit the solo home run to left field to score the final run of the game.
- Four Highland Cavalier players would gather hits, with Long scoring twice.
GAME TWO:
- The second game was a highly entertaining contest despite the low score, with players on both teams making several acrobatic catches.
- AU's Maddie Carpenter hit a solo home run in the top of the first to give her team the early 1-0 lead.
- The game settled into a defensive struggle for the next several innings before Long scored Frazier with a RBI double to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth.
- In the seventh, Anderson had two outs and a runner on second when an errant throw on the runner advancing to third was ruled as interference and she was allowed to advance home, giving the Trojans the 2-1 lead. UVA Wise would load the bases in the bottom of the inning but were unable to get a run across.
- The Cavs had nine hits in the game with four players having two hits apiece.
