MARS HILL, N.C. – The Cavs (9-12, 5-8 SAC) dropped a road contest against Mars Hill (11-11, 5-7 SAC) Saturday evening, 80-64.
The Cavs had a trio of scorers drop 18 points, but as a team UVA Wise shot just 22-for-61 (36.1 percent) from the floor and 5-for-18 (27.8 percent) from downtown.
Despite the three scorers with 18, the Cavs only got a combined 10 points from the nine other players that saw the floor in Saturday's loss.
Fifth-year guard Caitlyn Ross moved herself up a pair of career record lines despite the loss.
After today, no player in the South Atlantic Conference has started more games in their career than Ross. The game marked her 126th career start, a new SAC record. Ross broke Tusculum's Jasmine Gunn's record set back in 2011.
Ross also dished out five assists in the game, giving her 778 helpers in her career. 778 assists moves Ross up to second all-time in career assists in the SAC, passing Wingate's Anna Atkinson who finished with 776 assists in 2009.
Ross only needs 42 more assists to break the all-time SAC record for career assists. She will break the record if she averages 6.0 assists per game over the remaining seven regular season games. Ross is currently averaging 6.6 assists per contest this season.
Mars Hill was led in scoring by junior guard Maddie Gillie who dropped 31 points while adding seven rebounds. Gillie went 11-of-15 from the floor and 7-of-10 from downtown to lead her team to the win.
The Cavs will return home against Tusculum on Wednesday, Feb. 7. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. from the David J. Prior Convocation Center.
