WISE – The Cavalier women's basketball team (10-12, 6-8 SAC) picked up a much needed conference win over Tusculum (3-17, 1-13 SAC) with an 84-58 victory Wednesday night.
The Cavs utilized double-digit scoring efforts from five different players, led by fifth-year guard Caitlyn Ross with 22 points. Ross added six assists in the win. She now needs just 35 assists to break the all-time South Atlantic Conference record for career assists.
The Kingston, Tenn. native had a career night from downtown for UVA Wise. She went 5-for-10 from deep to tie a career-high five made three pointers.
The Cavs had a pair of 16-point scorers in redshirt freshman guard Sarah Burton and junior forward Katlin Burger.
Burton contributed in every facet Wednesday night. Along with her 16 points, she added five assists, five rebounds and a steal. Three of her rebounds came on the offensive glass to contribute to UVA Wise's 16 second chance points.
Burger contributed five rebounds and four assists to her scoring efforts. She was a perfect 8-for-8 from the floor, marking just the second time in her career in which she's gone 100 percent from the field and the first time doing so by making more than three shots.
Fifth year forward Leah Kestner added 10 points while junior guard Sable Burnside contributed to 12 points.
After suffering an off-night on offense Saturday in a loss to Mars Hill, the Cavs came back in full force Wednesday against Tusculum.
UVA Wise went 32-for-75 (42.7 percent) from the floor and 11-of-33 (33.3 percent) from downtown. The Cavs had 25 assists on 32 made field goals and had 34 points in the paint.
The Cavs now prepare for a big game Saturday against Limestone. UVA Wise dropped the first contest against Limestone back on Dec. 2, 64-57.
The Cavs and Saints are set to tip off at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10. UVA Wise will honor seniors Caitlyn Ross and Leah Kestner before the game.
