LONG POWERS CAVS ON OPENING DAY

The UVA Wise Cavaliers (1-1, 0-0 SAC) opened the 2024 campaign with an 11-2 victory over the Virginia Union University Panthers (0-2, 0-0 CIAA).

VUU scored two runs in the top of the first inning, but was silenced by junior pitcher Alivia Nolley and the Cavalier defense the rest of the game to give Nolley (1-0) her second complete game win of her career.

Redshirt freshman Savannah Johnson came up with a two-out single to plate two runs in the bottom of the third inning, putting the Cavaliers ahead 3-2.

"Offensively we started out a little slow, but was proud of the way the team made adjustments. Savannah's hit in the third to put us ahead was clutch and helped the team relax the rest of the game" stated Co-Head Coach Karen Bitter.

The Cavaliers scored eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, headlined by a grand slam from senior shortstop Kara Long. Junior infielder Abby Mills followed that up with a three-run home run, putting the Cavaliers in the position to complete the game with the win in four and a half innings.

In game two, the Cavaliers faced the University of Mount Olive Trojans. Long led the offense with a 2-for-4 performance with two doubles and an RBI. Freshman outfielder Mataya Ausmus was 1-for-3 and added an RBI for the Cavaliers who ultimately lost 5-2.

Junior pitcher Jillian Jones threw 5.1 innings in the circle for the Cavaliers, only giving up one earned run.

Co-Head Coach Karen Bitter commented that the Cavaliers "came out shaky in the first inning defensively. Jillian pitched a good game, just need to be sharper on defense and find another way to get her another run or two."

The Cavaliers will be back in action tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 4 against VUU at 10 a.m. in game one and Mount Olive at 12:30 p.m. in game two. Both games will continue to be played in Mount Olive, N.C.
