WISE – The UVA Wise women's basketball team battled from thirteen points down to take a lead, but a late Carson-Newman run ended the Highland Cavaliers' upset hopes as #11/6 Carson-Newman escaped the Prior Center with the 94-87 South Atlantic Conference win Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Makenzie Bremer put the Cavs ahead 2-0 to open the game, but the Eagles then grabbed the lead and slowly extended it to ten points with 3:27 left in the quarter. UVA Wise would cut it to five with under a minute remaining on a rebound and putback by
Sable Burnside, but C-N would hold the 24-17 lead at the end of the quarter.
- Carson-Newman extended the lead back to ten points early in the second quarter and the margin remained between seven to ten points for the remainder of the half.
- The third quarter was a carbon copy of the second, with the lead hovering around ten points for the majority of the period.
- The Highland Cavaliers came out on fire to open the fourth quarter, erasing a ten point deficit to tie the game up at 72-72 on an
Emilea Preece three-pointer from the top of the arc with 6:35 remaining.
Caroline Mullins then hit a layup and free throw to give the Cavs the 75-72 lead. Then the Eagles heated up offensively and the Cavs went cold from the field as C-N went on a 12-2 run of their own and UVA Wise cut get no closer than six points for the remainder of the game.
- Four Eagle players scored in double figures, led by Campbell Penland's 17 points and Tori Rutherford's 16 points. Penland led the Eagles with six rebounds while Rutherford had a team-high five assists.

Caroline Mullins led the Cavs with 17 points as she went 6-10 from the field, 3-3 from three-point range, and 2-3 from the free throw line.

Makenzie Bremer chipped in 15 points while going 5-6 from the field and the free throw line, while
Alissa Cheek and
Sable Burnside had ten points each.

Ella Karst had a game-high seven rebounds in addition to nine points and five assists.

Jalie Ruehling led all players with six assists, and Burnside had four steals.
